I did not find a mar record for them.

Marriage of James GARNER and Della DOWNES at Diddlebury, Shropshire on 28 Aug 1820.

I'm not sure that Elizabeth is the mother of Richard GARNER, though it is not impossible. There seems a long gap between Richard's birth c1828 and the marriage in 1836. Does it say what status William is at the time of marriage - bachelor or widowed?

My thinking on Richard Garner would be maybe a sibling to Elizabeth or maybe she was birth mother before marriage to William.

In the marriage record for William Garner & Elizabeth Garner, it says "b" which I assume means bachelor.

I notice on the 1871 census at Rushbury Richard GARDINER born c1828 at Delbury (aka Diddlebury) is son of Mary DUNN (widow, born c1797, Lancashire). (RG10/2736 pg22)

So Richard is the son of William's sister Mary who married William DUNN. Is Richard your ancestor, or another of William GARNER's children?

I assume this is Richard's marriage - Richard GARDENER to Mary REED registered at Church Stretton Jun qtr 1872 (6a/1125).

In the 1881 census they are at Rushbury (probably at the same farm as 1871) with a son Thomas READ (born c1864). RG11/2624 pg3.

Richard's father should be shown on the marriage registration.

Baptism of Richard GARDINER 30 Aug 1829 at Rushbury, mother Mary GARDINER. (On Ancestry, transcription only.) A possibility.

See that 1871 & 1881 census for Richard, & have found 1891 & 1901 census that seems to match (1901 census, Richard lists his birth place as Wetmoor even), so I will place him in my tree as the son of Mary Garner. Sending off for the marriage record to determine hopefully Mary Reed/Read's surname.
Since I don't have FindMyPast, is the other child of Mary Garner/Gardiner a twin or born in another year?
At this point, I will assume first spouse of William Garner is Elizabeth Garner with the infant child, Mary born/died theirs. The dates, places & connections all seem to fit! Thanks for your help on all this and the added generation to my ancestor!!
