Grandad's Service Record from Korean War
« on: Tuesday 27 July 21 12:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My Grandad was a British soldier in the Korean War - we know he was there because we have old photographs of him whilst he was there - but we have no idea which regiment/unit he was in because he never said much about it.

As he died last year, our interest in what he got up to whilst in service grew. So we thought to apply for his service records from the government - but we need to know which regiment/unit he was in as well as his service number in order to get them.

Can you help?

You don't need to know his regiment.  The army application form asks for his service number or his date of birth* so if you have only the latter, I'd go ahead and apply.  Be prepared for a long wait, months!

I'm afraid we have neither his service number or his regiment - which is why I'm asking for help here.

I think that MaxD's point was that you only need either his service number OR his birth date. If you don't know his service number, complete the form using his birth date.

Exactly.  Look at the army details form at the link I gave, nowhere does it ask for his regiment and the either/or is quite clear also.
