Lefterhand
« on: Tuesday 27 July 21 17:26 BST (UK) »
Hi, I’ve an ancestor with Lefterhand as part of her full name (Susannah Lefterhand Lorne or Lane) but I can’t see why.  It’s not a common or local surname in Suffolk or in the country generally.  Does anyone else have this name in their tree?

Would you care to give us a timescale?  I can certainly see no entries post 1837, via FreeBMD, for such a surname anywhere within England and Wales.

Marriage index has her surname as Lanes, have you looked at the parish register entry.

Hi, yes that’s the marriage.  The PR is very clearly Lefterhand although it’s not so clear if it’s Lane or Lorne. Her signature is indecipherable but more than a simple mark.  Baptism entries for her children show mother ‘late Lane’.  I read it was sometimes an indication of illegitimacy but it’s not used anywhere else in the PR and I doubt she would be the only illegitimate person in the area.

Is there any chance of putting a snip from the parish register entry.  It's very clear on Boyds, as if  someone has overwritten it to make it more clear,

Strange - Banns say Lefterland - Marriage entry says Lefterhand  - and the signature doesn't resemble either forename or surname.
