Watercolor Picture and deciphering artist signature
« on: Tuesday 27 July 21 21:06 BST (UK) »
I am trying to determined the signature or photo identification. The picture is watercolor. The signature I am unable to identify. It might be difficult unless someone can recognize the signature or remember the subject. Any assistance is appreciated. Based on the framing I would think (guessing)late 1800's to early 1900's. Could be older or earlier. Tiny nails are hold the frame together.

Thank you

Hallo Herman (and welcome to RootsChat)!  :)

It is a lovely portrait. Do you have any idea where it might have come from? (Which country?)

I wondered whether the first part was just another "crease" in the boy's shirt, but I think it is probably part of the signature. In which case, probably an "A".

I have sat here, tracing my finger over the sig, and I think it might be 2 letters and 2 numbers, rather than a 4-letter name.

If so, it could be something like AW06

Conjecture, of course.  ;D Do you have any idea whether it could be from a well-known artist?

Best regards,
Karen

It possibly a part of the are actual picture because the texture of the crease is the about same thickness throughout the collar of the shirt. Many artist are creative as you know. But, I think without the "crease" it's closer to "Auot" Could be an initial.

I purchase it here in the USA, in particular, Colorado.

Karen,

I think it's possible to be from a well known painter. Very few modern day artist paint figurine these days, especially in watercolor.  Based on the technic this is a 1800's/very early 1900's piece. However, it could be earlier.

Are you sure it's watercolour? It looks more like pastel to me, with lines in charcoal or possibly ink,

Karen,

I will remove the back carefully and review it again. It might be pastel. Gove me 15 minutes and and I'll come back to you.

I too thought it was pastels. Has it been “set”? If not, be careful or the colours will rub off!
