Ann Tomlinson marriage 1782
« on: Wednesday 28 July 21 17:26 BST (UK) »
Ann Tomlinson married Andrew Pearson by licence on 23 Dec 1782, at St Leodagarius in Basford.

I’ve traced Andrews forebears back a good long way but Ann is a brick wall. I don’t know if she originated in Notts. Andrew was baptised in 1760, and he and Ann both died in 1809, when Ann’s year of birth was reckoned to be 1762. But there are no appropriate baptisms on my FHS disc for her.

Does anyone have access to any details from the marriage licence that might offer any more clues?

Thanks in advance.

Free Reg has the following baptism:-
Ann Tomlinson 8 Nov 1762. St Mary, Bulwell. Father John.
Bulwell to Basford is less than 2 miles but I think you will require further personal details before you can safely say this is your girl.

Thanks. I never remember to look at freereg! I can see a marriage between John Tomlinson and Elizabeth Rose with just two children, John and Ann. no relevant burials.

Ann and Andrew had a lot of children, some with a couple of less common names; excluding their daughter Ann and no fewer than 4 sons called Andrew, they also had (in order) Margaret, Cassandra, William, George, Anthony, Eleanor, Henry(x2), hannah, Charlotte and Alfred. Cassandra in particular seems a bit of a wildcard, I’ve found no-one of that name on Andrew’s side.

There is a CASSANDRA Tomlinson bapt Basford 1815 to ANTHONY/MARY (nee Keworth)

So maybe Cassandra is a Tomlinson christian name.

Interestingly a ANTHONY/ELIZABETH Tomlinson bapt a Daug Elizabeth 1789 Bulwell

Looking at FreeREG he seems to have married in in Derbyshire 1784 and bapt children in Derby and Notts 1785-1798

Hi Annie,

The marriage bond will be at Nottingham University. I don't always find their site the easiest to navigate so have given the links for anyone else that may be interested.

Hope it is of some help  :)

Holdings

Manuscripts and Special Collections holds bonds and allegations for licences granted by the Archdeaconry Court of Nottingham from 1594 to 1884 (the year in which the Archdeaconry of Nottingham joined with the county of Derby from the Diocese of Lichfield to form the Diocese of Southwell).

Until 1841, the Archdeaconry of Nottingham had ecclesiastical jurisdiction over most of the county of Nottingham but twenty-eight Nottinghamshire parishes came, instead, under the jurisdiction of the Peculiar Court of Southwell:

Beckingham, Bleasby, Blidworth, Calverton, Carlton-on-Trent, Caunton, Cropwell Bishop, Darlton, Dunham, Eaton, Edingley, Farnsfield, Halam, Halloughton, Holme, Kirklington, Morton, North Leverton, North Muskham, Norwell, Oxton, Ragnall, Rampton, Southwell, South Muskham, South Wheatley, Upton, Woodborough.
For details of marriages taking place in these parishes, application should be made to Nottinghamshire Archives.

Before 1837, the Archdeaconry of Nottingham also included some places in Yorkshire; for example Austerfield (a chapelry of Blyth) and Bawtry (a chapelry of Haworth).

Thank you, dizzifish and trish1120.

The bond is useful in stating Ann to have been a spinster - so at least I know there's a reasonable chance that she was baptised Tomlinson. It's a shame that the other signatory - John Green - doesn't seem to be helpful in the search but there you are!

I'll look into the possible Cassandra T link. Since it was one of the first female names that Ann and Andrew used for their daughters, they must have either really liked it, or be reusing a family name.
