The Leach, Mexborough

Hi all, I have a death certificate from 1897 which has the place of death as the Leach, Mexborough. Does anyone know what this place was as I have searched online but all I can find is a Leach Lane but no building.

There's a Leech Bridge on this late 19th century map [spelt with 2 e's].

and this list of Methodist baptisms shows a family in Leech Row, Market Street.

I would suspect that 'The Leech' is the area of housing north of Leech Bridge, south of Market Street. The modern Leach Lane is the dotted track running south of Market Street to Leech Bridge.

Perhaps look at the 1901 census to see the enumerators walk to see where The Leach/Leech features.

It seems more like a hospital or possibly workhouse related.

Here is enumerator's walk from 1901.There's a Leach Cottage next to the Station Houseas well as Leach Row off Market Street.

Just checking - the place of death listed in column 1 of the certificate also says  'The Leach' as well as the address of the informant? Was the informant a relative? Where was the deceased living in 1891 & where was A E Andrews living in 1901?

Yes the first column also has the Leach listed. I don't think it was the home of the person who died, it says he died of influenza after 10 days. I'm not sure who the A E Andrews is. I'll see if I can find any info on that person. The person who died was my grt grandad but I have no information on him at all apart from the death certificate.

I did see that there were some Almshouses in Market Street at the top of Leach Lane, maybe as you say they were called The Leach. Maybe get in touch with a local history society?
