Hi, Im new here
« on: Saturday 31 July 21 14:51 BST (UK) »
Just registered here today.
Been looking into my family history for the last 40 years, on and off.
Looking forwards to finding my way around the site.

If anyone has any information about how to get started here I would be very grateful,
I struggle terribly with using computers.

My childhood surname was Wyman, first name Shani
and I grew up in Edmonton N.9.
and went to Houndsfield School as did my parents.

My Father John was born in 1930's, and was a dustman - refuse collector - for Edmonton council.
My Mother Patricia (nee Sapsford) was born in 1936 and was a "homehelp" for Edmonton council.
They married on 4/1/1958 at all saints in church street N9.

I know there are a couple of Wyman graves in the Church Street cemetary,
but no idea if they relate to me yet, or not.

I know the Wymans were in the brick making trade, I believe a park is now where the brickfield was, and some Wymans were builders in areas of Edmonton called Bury Street, the area of Ponders End called Church Road, and they made part of the college in Freezeywater.

Mother died in 2006 and is burried in the grave part of Enfield Crematorium on the A10
I lost contact with Father in 1999 when my parents got divorced.

I moved to Wales in 2006.

I am still in contact with Fathers half brother, Removed, (same mother as my father, May Lily Wyman who is burried in church st N9, different father to my father's father) who is keen to learn all he can he is in his late 70's now, and it would be nice to be able to help fill in some of the blanks for him.
He lives in Norfolk now.

I am still in contact with my Cousin Removed who is also in his 70s now and it would be nice to see if I can find out more about his Mother (my Aunt) who was born Constance Irene Ward in Waltham Abbey Essex, she married my Uncle Robert George Sapsford in the Abbey, she died quite soon after she had my cousin, and she is burried in the cemetary where the M25 passes underneath at junction 25.
He lives in Hertfordshire now.

A few leads to go on, but still loads of work to do.

Pointers where to look are gratefully recieved.  Thank you.

Welcome, Welsh Harpist.  You will get lots of help here but the first, golden rule is to edit your post to remove the names of living people.  Just refer to your cousin as "my cousin, RS" for example.

For people born after 1911, you'll have to get their birth certificates usually, to find out the names of their parents.  If you need to buy birth certificates, do so directly from the General Register Office GRO not via the likes of Ancestry who will charge extra for the privilege. Then you should be able to trace their parents, grandparents etc by using the Birth, Marriage and Death records on FreeBMD or the GRO websites - free to use but you need to register for both.  To find more details, you'll need to use the census records on Ancestry, Find My Past or The Genealogist (pay sites but some local libraries have free access depending where you live). Two other free sites are Freereg and Freecen - coverage isn't 100% but you might be lucky and find details there.  If your ancestors left wills, you can get copies cheaply from the central probate registry - just google these sites for the web addresses.
The secret is to work systematically back from what you know, note down what you find and where you found it and try to avoid a scattergun approach or you'll get your details muddled up. If and when you hit a specific brick wall, start a new thread with that one specific problem so people on here can see clearly what you want to find out and can help with that query.  You can put as many details of deceased people as you want, but it is best to treat the information of recently deceased people with more caution than of an ancestor who died in 1880, say.
Hope that helps for a start. :)

Is this the death registration for May Lilian Wyman:

3rd qtr 1974 Enfield Middlesex, gives birthdate as 20th September 1902. This may help to find her on 1911 Census with her parents hopefully :)
