Mabel,
Thanks so much for your input, so nothing out of the ordinary or unusual in this case...
Keith
...and Sandra, you've very neatly tied up all the loose ends.  I wonder why he didn't leave his estate to his second wife Annie Evelyn.  And yes, Edward Patrick was the only child of his first ill-fated marriage.  For five years as a young boy I went to school with one of Frederick DUNPHY's grandchildren...

Just for info, the person named in the Probate calendar was the 'executor' of the will and may or may not be a beneficiary. Sometimes the probate wass granted to a bank or a solicitor.

The only way to know who was a beneficiary named in a will is to obtain a copy of the will via
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
(make sure you are on the correct tab for the time frame when you search)
which will cost £1.50.
For that you get a copy of the will and a copy of the grant.

Boo

Oh, dear, Rosie,
More trouble and strife for Dr Dunphy...I must have a look on the map and see how far apart Selston and Alfreton are in their respective counties, too.

Derbyshire Times and Chesterfield Herald 24 May 1924

This paper has more information on the Bankruptcy, it mentions how when he purchased the practice in Alfreton and a motor car and drugs for about £950 he only had 6d.  He had paid £360 in instalments.  Present liabilities amounted to £1560 and assets (including £447 in book debts) to £676.
Causes of failure heavy law costs in connection with divorce proceedings, heavy travelling expenses and losses on a nursing home and the practice.

He had executed a charge on his interest in his parents marriage settlement in order to cover the cost of his sons education. During the past 3 years he had borrowed extensively.

Case was adjourned for a month

If you get a chance to view online newspapers there are quite a few articles about hime, many are duplicates so I have not looked at them all.

Rosie,
This is all quite wonderfully exciting, the picture of this man being fleshed out more thoroughly.  I have recently learned a great deal about his only child and son Edward Patrick Dunphy, but only now is his father coming more into focus thanks to all the new information that has been provided by you and several others on this thread already all in the space of a few hours  today.  The wonder of Rootschat!
