Missing from the Probate Register
« on: Sunday 01 August 21 10:00 BST (UK) »
Hello all!
I'm wondering whether anyone here might know of a reason why a person's probate record might be missing from the UK Probate Register? I have the death certificate confirming the date of death (14/6/1917) and a newspaper article reporting that the Will had been "proved" on 12/9/17. But I have looked all through the register using all sorts of variations of the name that I can think of, to no avail. I thought all Wills became available on the Public Record once they had been proved but I'm wondering if there is any reason why a Will record may not have been listed in the Probate Register, and if so, is there anywhere else I should look?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cathy  :)

There is no "UK" Probate register. There are separate jurisdictions for England and Wales, Scotland, and (in 1917) Ireland. Where was the will proved?

Probably not relevant here, but there are also separate jurisdictions for Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
None of which are part of the UK ;)

Sorry… forgot to say I would imagine the will was proved in England. It’s where he was born, lived, died and was buried. He was a British politician when he died so there would be no reason for it to be proved anywhere else… or am I mistaken?  :-\

He may have had assets in other jurisdictions, and therefore the will would have to be proved in each jurisdiction.

I have involvement twice with Isle of Man Wills that also had to be proved in England.
Once due to shares; once due to property.

Not the easiest to find - it's indexed under "Stau..." and appears between Statton and Stauffer.

(I tried lots of permutations too, including "St Aud...", but I only found this by going to Ancestry and putting in Alexander without a surname, and with an exact date of death.)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
