Baptism of George Yewde, 1642
« on: Sunday 01 August 21 11:22 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm trying to work out if the attached parish record shows the baptism of George & Thomas, or if Thomas is a completely separate baptism and George has no father listed.  I'm struggling to work out the word (or words) after Thomas to see if it is a different surname for Thomas.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks,

Jean

To me it looks like:

George Yewde &
Thomas Helsbie
fil Johannis

So, two different entries, no father for George
Mead - Herts, Bucks, Essex
Pontifex - Bucks
Goldhurst - London, Middx, Herts
Kellogg/Kelhog - Essex, Cambs

Thanks Vance,

Helsbie is a place near where they were baptised, I wonder if it is George & Thomas of Helsbie - or is this wishful thinking?

Is it possible that the George yewde entry is not a baptism but something else: perhaps a burial?

Looking at the entries on the 27th of March, we have:

Alice Weston f: Tho &
Martha Pyke fil Ric &
Katherine [Sma(i)le?] [illeg(itimate)?]

The ampersands there don't match the character following yewde.

What is that character?  Is it really an ampersand?  What is the lower loop for (given it's not part of the b of Helsbie)?

It's a reach but I'm wondering if it might be an abbreviation of S(enior)?

Further to horselydown86's idea, could it be "Se" (= Sepultus)?  That would, of course, make George Yewde's entry a burial, as suggested by h.  What is the register that we are looking at?

Thanks everyone - I'm open to suggestions on this.  The register is Frodsham St Lawrence in Cheshire and looking at the adjacent pages the entries seem to be in different writing and styles so difficult to say.  A burial would make sense given no father's name - and there usually is one on the other entries.

So I've found a George Yewde and possibly lost one on the same day!

It's Frodsham St. Lawrence, but are there burials as well as baptisms in the register which has been used here?  Or is it from the Bishop's Transcripts?  Either way, a burial entry for George Yewde seems perfectly possible.

It's the parish register rather than the BT's but it does contains births, burials and marriages so I think you are right and it is a burial.

So back to the drawing board for George born c1640 but possible the burial for George born 1604!

One door closes and another opens...

Thanks for your help.
