Help with 1841 Census Please
« on: Monday 02 August 21 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Looking for assistance with Occupation of William Smith from 1841 Census for Hull, Yorkshire. Looks like Surgeon's Asst. to me..
Strange as I have him on 1851 & 1861 Census as a Grocer in London.
Thanks in advance
Peter

I agree with ShaunJ as to WS occupation on 1841c

Could you give more details for WS on the 1851/1861 census

Where was he born?
Was he married?

Thank you very much for that..
I have not been able to find their Marriage as yet.. I was assuming it would have been abt. 1839 in London somewhere as they are both from London, but cant find it yet..

I did see the Marriage record for Albert Smith.
So he was a Surgeons assistant, Grocer and now Chemist he is also listed as "Secretary" on 31 Aug 1868 marriage of his Son William Birch Smith to Emma Curchod
That's quite a varied Career, I am starting to think I have a crossed line somewhere

Also these marriages.....

Father WBS occ Druggist (Dec’d)

Arthur Henry Smith age 22
23 Dec 1882 St Andrew, Peckham, Southwark
Father:   William Birch Smith
Spouse:   Elizabeth Jane Scarle

SMITH, ARTHUR  HENRY   mn APPLEBY
GRO Reference: 1861  J Quarter in HACKNEY  Volume 01B  Page 330

Father William’s occ Chemist (Dec’d)

Frederick Charles Smith age 29
25 Dec 1876 All Saints, Walworth, Southwark
Father:   William Smith
Spouse:   Amelia Mary

SMITH, FREDERICK  CHARLES   mn APPLEBY
GRO Reference: 1846  S Quarter in ST. JAMES CLERKENWELL  Volume 03  Page 81

There are plenty of SMITH/APPLEBY birth entries on GRO Indexes from 1837 onwards but none in reg district in Kingston upon Hull (GRO), Hull (FreeBMD) where their daughter Frances Elizabeth Smith 1840 birth was registered - probably their first child, next1843 Catherine Ann Kingston upon Hull , then Google Union 1845 William Birch Smith, then we move to London area (all have mn APPLEBY)

Did William & Elizabeth marry in Yorkshire perhaps before 1837?

Elizabeth SMITH age 22 born c1819 on 1841 census and on 1851c
born c 1822 St George Hanover Square, Middlesex

Is this Elizabeth’s baptism? one of her daughters middle name is Martha and another Ann :-\
or
Could it be the Elizabeth Appleby age 22 FS on 1841 census in St George Bloomsbury Piece:   672 Folio: 17 Page Number:   29

Elizabeth Appleby Birth    13 Apr 1819
Baptism    1 Aug 1819 St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, Camden
Father:   John Appleby, coach maker
Mother:   Martha, abode 13 Lascelles Place

Elizabeth Appleby
Residence Age:   3
Birth Date:   abt 1819
Event Type:   Settlement Papers
Residence Date:   19 Oct 1822

Some info. From Settlement Papers
Martha married John Appleby at Islington Middlesex by Banns on 6 Feb 1815
3 children Martha age about 7 & Ann age 5 and a half & Elizabeth age 3 and upwards
said husband had deserted her does not know where he resides

edit to add marriage of John Appleby 6 Feb 1815 St Mary, Islington to Martha Newman
in the presence of William Newman & Elizabeth Appleby
