RAMC questions
« on: Monday 02 August 21 18:44 BST (UK) »
Hi. I have my grandad's service records, but I wondered if there was any way I could find out more about where he was wounded and what was happening in that area at the time? He was in the RAMC (22 Company 436207) and wounded in Northern France on 23 March 1945.

What does it mean on the army recordings under 'postings' when it's written X and a number afterwards. For example: X (ii) or X (iv)?

Are there any WW2 diaries for 22 Company (436207)?

Thank you.

Hello mcsorley
Had a quick look about and found... this site
https://germanwarmachine.com/timelines/world-war-ii-day-by-day/world-war-ii-1945/march-1945
Section 22-31 March Allies crossings of the Rhine River...also
Operation Plunder, the crossing of the Rhine.
https://www.holland.com/global/tourism/holland-stories/liberation-route/the-liberation-of-holland.htm....
fighting on 23 March 1945 proved to be the last set-piece battle between the Allies and Germans in Europe

You also might try and contact and see if they have any clues..

Sorry for such general leads and good luck with you searches
Regards
Mark W

The X list is explained in a number of places example here  http://www.commandoveterans.org/x_lists

No diary found as yet.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

There is certainly no 22 Company diary at the National Archives.  The suggestions made by Markw78 may prove your best approach.

In a previous thread you posted information that suggested that he was with 176 Field Ambulance when he was wounded

Quote
1942: 22 Coy
1943: 21 Field Dressing Station
1944: X (IV) List (hard to read but could be "List" or "Y hist")
1944: 176 Field Ambulance 29
1945: X (ii)
1945: 176 Field Ambulance (wounded by this time)
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=726186.0

There is a recent thread on another forum concerning someone who was killed serving with 176 Field Ambulance on 24 March 1945 http://ww2talk.com/index.php?threads/looking-for-information-about-14630016-private-william-george-lock-ramc-24-03-1945.90320/

176 Field Ambulance war diary is at TNA: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2737066

There may be more - there seems to have been separate war diaries for A and B companies of 176 Field Ambulance https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_q=176+field+ambulance
