Is there any way to access their BMD. I have a person who was born in Manila early 20th century and possibly died there as her fourth husband was from there. Will supply further details is it can be done.

Regards
John

Find My Past have British Armed Forces and Overseas Births and Baptisms and it covers the Philippines.

Would you like to give me the name and birth year of the person whose birth record you are seeking? I can then have a look and see if anything comes up.

This is assuming that your person was British.

Thanks for the offer but I don't believe she was military and she spent many years in Australia after England. Hidis Mary Worthington Atherton, according to passenger lists, was born Manilla, Philippines any time from 1895 to 1909 - her birth date varying from passenger list to passenger list. From English and Australian marriage records she married Frank Simon, died 1930, in 1925 in England. Then in Australia by 1934 when she marries Edward M Carolin in 1934, divorced 1938, then Norman Anthony Wood in 1942 in Australia, then William Adrian Hornberg in 1954, in Sydney. Then disappears from records. Her only appearance on Australian electoral rolls is in 1943 as Hidis Carolin, writer - but writer of what.
Her last husband could be the William A Hornberg, apparently born c1906, possibly born in the Philippines according to a passenger list.
I have a note she came to Britain c1920, was an actress and author before marrying Simon who was apparently twice her age. But no idea of the source, and cannot find anything about her on the internet etc, now, nor can a fellow researcher in Australia.

Regards
John

Hhmm not much comes up for her does it  ::)

I can see her marriage record:-

Marriages Sep 1925

Atherton    Hidis M    Simon    Marylebone    1a   1517
Simon    Frank L W    Atherton    Marylebone    1a   1517

Did you obtain the certificate to see what age she gave and who her father was?

When did she go to Australia?

I see that she went to the USA in 1932 on her own.  Future intended residence was given as England.

I've found what appears to be a second marriage for her to an Edward M. CAROLIN in 1934 in Woollahra, NSW, registration number 19235.

Another marriage as Hidis Mary Carolin in 1942.  Again in Woollahra to Norman Anthony Wood, registration number 18720.

Her Australian marriage certificates should name both of her parents, and give other useful information. Purchasing through a transcription agent is the cheapest option, though I am unsure if current lockdowns in NSW will prevent that for the time being.

Link to marriage record NSW

https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/result?7

The above relates to the 1934 marriage

https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/result?3

The above relates to the 1942 marriage

They take you to the order page.  No idea how much it would cost nor how long it would take for them to arrive should you wish to order either or both.

A fellow researcher in Australia has sent me this:
"I've searched high and low, but I can't add anything to what you already have, apart from the fact that her last(?) husband was Dutch, born 1906, Willem Andriaan Hornberg. He seems to have been a POW of the Japanese in WW2. On 27 January 1955, Willem Adriaan ("known as William Adrian") Hornberg became a naturalized Australian. His address is given as 20 Etham Ave Darling Point, NSW. However, I can't find him on the electoral rolls, so I wonder if they left Australia (and went to the Netherlands?)."
Does seem curious he went back to his homeland after getting Australian citizenship. 1968 Australian electoral roll has two women living at the address, so my couple have gone elsewhere. Interesting the address does not appear very often on the rolls over the years.
Another of my unanwerable queries, methinks.
