Adopted child 1901
« on: Tuesday 03 August 21 16:15 BST (UK) »
I have an adopted child in my family, I dont know his birth name only his birthday and where he was born. Minster Kent on the 1.3.1901, Now he might have been born in the Union Workhouse but I have no proof, yet again I am being very blind and cant find any lists of children born. I need yet again another pair of eyes.

Tricky without a name.

If you know his mothers name maybe that will help searching workhouse records  :-\

Do you know which workhouse?  (if indeed was born there)

If so you could start by making enquiries about their records around the birth date.

If he was already adopted by the 1901 census date that's less than a month.

Can I assume the child is listed with the same surname as the 1901 family but described as "adopted" ?
Sounds a little odd.  There may be a link to someone in that family being the parent.

He is listed as adopted son and has the surname of his adopted family, I presume they also changed his first names.

It will not be an official adoption as that didn't happen until about 1927.

Before that illegitimate or orphaned children may be placed within the family but some were arranged as unofficial adoptions by religious homes, solicitors etc.
