Butler family lookup please
« on: Tuesday 03 August 21 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hi

I’m hoping for some help in locating the family of Henry Butler born abt 1845 in Birmingham. He married Mary Ann Farley in 1874 in Birmingham, they had 5 children.
I haven’t been able to find this family pre the 1881 census, which is where I located the children’s names. Henry gives Joseph Butler, Labourer as his father but I haven’t been able to locate him or a birth for Henry. There are 3 possibilities but I’d like to narrow it down before I start paying for certificates. Hence why I was hoping to find them in a census before 1881.
Hopefully someone can help!
Many thanks :)

The marriage appears in England Marriages 1538-1973

09 Aug 1874 Marriage place Ashted. Brief transcript, no Image available.

However on familysearch: England, Warwickshire, Parish Registers, 1535-1963

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGD2-3SR2

You can find his father's name.

Marriage gives a different age/birth year though, does it not?

I haven’t been able to find this family pre the 1881 census

They weren't a family yet in 1871 which is the next census to look at.

I realise that, I worded it wrong. I haven’t been able to find Henry Butler or his siblings pre 1881

Ok, so you "have" 3 possibles.
(a) List them name/ year& qtr place , MMN
(b) look for sibling(s) based on MMN & area
Look for all those names in census to identify a family group.

If you can't find them, then type in the birth index entrie(s) for both Henry & potential siblings and see if someone else can find them.

Have you ruled this one out?

1851 in Birmingham;
Mary Butler   36 Head, Widow, Lodging house Keeper
Edward Butler   9
Henry Butler   5  born Birmingham
Christopher Butler 3

Cant find Birth Regs for the boys only this possible one.

BUTLER, EDWARD mmn FREGLETON
GRO Reference: 1843  S Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 16  Page 350

Death Reg GRO
BUTLER, JOSEPH age    37
GRO Reference: 1843  J Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 16  Page 208

(if Joseph 2 boys would be illeg)

I have no idea if this is your Henry, just something to look at.

I cant see any of them after 1851 Census.

This is your Henry's birth:

BUTLER, HENRY
Mother' maiden surname: HOPKINS
GRO Reference: 1847  D Quarter in FOLESHILL AND SOWE  Volume 16  Page 415

In 1911 Henry has a niece living with him in Oldbury named Lillian Rose GARRETT aged 19.  She was the daughter of Walter GARRETT and Eliza FRANCIS.  Walter later also married Susan HARBORNE.

Walter born 1855 was the son of Joseph GARRET and Mary BUTLER nee HOPKINS who had married in 1849 in Coventry.  They were both widowed.  You will find them in Coventry in 1861 where Henry BUTLER is recorded as son-in-law of Joseph GARRETT which was another term for step son.  (Piece 2207, Folio 96, Page number 31)  So Walter and Henry were step brothers.

A possible marriage, names appear on the same page:

Marriages Sep 1837

BUTLER,    John
HOPKINS,    Mary Ann
Meriden    16   323

Thank you!
I saw Garrett but didn’t put all the pieces together, I’ve just found Henry in the 1881 census.
This’ll give me something and somewhere to go, my brain was drawing a blank. Thank you again
