Identifying a photo

Can anyone help me with the attached - it was in my dads things, but I don’t think he’s on there. One suggestion was the Home Guard.
Dad joined the Durham Light Infantry in 1922, transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers, and eventually ended up at the Small Arms School in Hythe, before leaving the army in the early fifties.

Any idea on the uniform, era?

The cap badge looks very much like that of the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Okay, that makes sense. 
Can you tell me when or what the metal helmets were used for?
And what is the “box”in front, with a badge/sign, that the guy is holding?

Steel helmets were standard issue, first issued (I think) around the time of D-Day.  They remained in service until the mid-1980s (and uncomfortable they were too!)

The insignia on the box may well be a Battalion Emblem, although others with better knowledge than me should be able to help you with that.

I could be wrong but I think the 'badge' on what I think is simply an ammunition box is a '1A'  on a black square/diamond. It might be the equivalent then of the 'hazard' signs we have on modern military ammunition containers and that you see on vehicles transporting dangerous goods.

Thank you both. All the bits of information help with the overall picture.
So probably WWII, not I then.
Dad didn’t fight in the war - he was teaching men to shoot, including officers at Sandhurst. Some of them didn’t like being taught by a lowly soldier!

Probably earlier than WW2, judging by the uniforms and webbing. Mid 1930's most likely. Not sure about the apparently white uniforms- others may be able to explain that. The large pouches around their necks are their gas masks.

The 'white' uniforms may actually be khaki uniform that just looks white in the photo. Just a thought.
