I'm half thinking Dutch/Flemish going by the style of the buildings in the picture.

The signature isn't the clearest is it  ::)  The first letter is pehaps a J with a very elongated top stroke.  The rest is perhaps - a n i (or closed e) two ls - i or e or a - the rest are hard to decipher.

So Jani(e)lli(e/a).........

Maybe other Rootschatters will have some suggestions for you.

I did try putting the picture in google images but didn't come up with a match.  The suggestion was canals which is reasonable.

Jamillona?
Or— as there is no dot on the fourth letter perhaps not an i.
It looks very like Ghent, I only two days ago threw away a tourists’ book  and  if it is where I think it is, it would have been in there !
I would say it is somewhere behind the huge castle, “ Het Gravensteen “in the very old part of the city.
Patershol, a bit “ Bohemian” these days.but no water there ,and  Het Predikerenlei.
I imagine you wish your ancestor had bought artwork by people who could write as well as they could paint!
Viktoria.

Herman - how old do you think this painting is?  When did you acquire it and from whom?

I do not know the age. However, I was able to track down the photograph studio that framed the painting.  The Studio was in Beatrice, Nebraska, USA. The owner of the studio was born in 1887 and owned the Studio until his death in 1925. After his death the studio was closed.

So, my guess the age can be estimated between 1887-1925.

I purchase the painting from a small antique shop some months ago in Neighboring Denver, Colorado USA. Many people from Nebraska relocate too Colorado to live. So, I can be quite sure it's how it arrived here.

Size: 19 1/4 x 15 5/8

I take it that there is nothing on the back that gives any clues at all?

Are there any auction houses in your area or further afield to whom you could send the image of the picture and ask if their art experts can identify it at all?

Or perhaps an art museum that might be able to assist?  I'm sure there must be quite a few art museums in the US.  Worth a try perhaps?

I will start to investigate in-depth real soon.

I am in the process of marketing my Cindy Shermans Vintage and Percy Moran art at the moment. Afterward, I will start on my other art pieces. I have been collecting and selling since 1994. Time to move on the my other passions.

I just wanted to find out if anyone might knew of the artist. Also, the signature is in Pencil. I forgot to mention that in my previous correspondence.
