Tingha NSW - old photos wanted
« on: Monday 09 August 21 13:25 BST (UK) »
Hi all. I am after old photos of Tingha NSW between 1875 1920 that show businesses within the town and main street.
I have already seen what is available on google images and basic internet search. I already have a copy of Helen Brown's 'Tin at Tingha'.

What I am hoping is that someone might have some, or know location of some that I might not have seen that could assist me.

I am also after a town map that shows allotments. As it began as a private town I could not see anything on NSW historic parish maps that shows allotments owned by people as it just says 'Private Town'.
Although I know one of my ancestors owned a property there (later sold) so am hoping someone might have a map with landholders on it.

I have already tried Green Valley Farm a few times but they have not been forthcoming with anything as yet.

Thanks, Katharine.

Hi,

Have you checked through the NSW State Library's online Digital Collection?  The resources online via the Library and also at the NSW State Archives are usually my first check.

NSW State Library : https://collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/digital
'5,028,177 digital files from the Library’s collections are accessible online, with more being added all the time. Start exploring them below now.'

NSW State Archives: https://www.flickr.com/people/state-records-nsw/  and https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/webinars

and of course Trove is not just for newspapers ....
https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/229905692?keyword=tingha   That photo is from 1914, and its the police station at Tingha.   It is part of the collection at Trove's section  'Images, Maps & Artefacts ' here's a link to the search box for that area of Trove https://trove.nla.gov.au/search/category/images

Hope you find this helpful.

JM

Hi JM

Thanks for the links! The state library holds a town plan map I can see but no further information on who held the lots, but its a start. Have to wait for Library to be out of lockdown to progress with that one.

As for the other sites (which I have already been on and searched there previously) I can't see any that will help me, but I do always check back.

I hadn't seen the webinars before but that looks good - I will have to go back in when I have time and explore some of those.

In the meanwhile I heard back from Green Valley Farm and no luck.
I am hoping that someone who is connected to Tingha might have old photos lurking around in albums or cupboards that show some of the main streets and buildings. Would love to hear back from anyone connected to Tingha.

Thanks, Katharine.

Hi Katherine
In my experience local history societies are very good with knowing about the detailed allotment land maps it sounds as if you are after.
Perhaps send an email? They might have photos as well.

Thanks Neale. I have contacted Inverell and Armidale regarding this previously but hadn't had much luck. Hadn't tried the one you suggest as I thought that was Glen Innes area.
But in any case I have now, with help of State Library (ask a librarian) found a town map with allotment numbers. Exactly what I wanted, but unlike some cadastral (?) maps it has no names on allotments. They also sent me some webinars so I can now locate things on NSW Historic Land Records Viewer other than just parish maps - which I already knew how to find.

So last night I managed to start finding some of the information I was looking for. Still lots of detective work to do.

Am still after photos though. I might ring your suggestion as its possible they will have something.
