William Wellwood - Convict arrived New Years Eve 1830 on the Burrell
« on: Monday 09 August 21 16:32 BST (UK) »
William Wellwood is a n'er do well cousin 3 times removed, sentenced to 14yrs transportation in 1830.

I'm trying to find out what happened after his time in Australia. He received a ticket of leave passport on 28th April 1847 and apparently disappeared! Can anyone point me in the right direction to try and find out more?

I'm assuming he got a passage from Australia somewhere - there's a William Wellwood in Canada by 1850 that's a possible match but no direct link.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I had seen that and it gives a good description of his tattoos that I hadn't found before. As a "missing friends" article, does that mean he's been in Australia up to 1879? Or could it mean he's left and come back - the ticket to leave passport feels like a definite intention to leave the country...

William Wellwood per Burrell 1830 is recorded in Colonial Secretary papers (m3638) in the "Annual return of convict deaths" - 22 May 1879.

It is not clear if that date is the date of his death, or the date the document. I suspect the later.

In which case, the death may be the one registered (5866/1876 ) in Deniliquin NSW in 1876 with parents names William and May.
There was a William Wellwood who purchased land in Deniliquin in 1862, and also married there in the same year to Mary Hogben.

Amazing! That sounds correct - I have his mother as Mary not May but that could be a simple error. So I just need to figure out why he didn't leave when he had the chance.

Thank you

William Wellwood per Burrell 1830 is recorded in Colonial Secretary papers (m3638) in the "Annual return of convict deaths" - 22 May 1879.

This is record of the enquiry made into his whereabouts and has his trial and ToL details, and -
Papers to Mr Ryeland for Enquiry 22/5/79
Subsequently filed in the PG Office

Note the date is about a week before the Police Gazette entry
No mention of his death unfortunately

This is all really useful, thank you for your help.

I'm struggling to find this record, do you have a link to the site you used?
