help please with baptism 1814 laughton
« on: Monday 09 August 21 20:00 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help?
I have found a Seaman's Ticket for:
John Balcomb which states that he was born in Laughton, Sussex in 1814.
Please can anyone find a baptism for him? I'd be very grateful for any help.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi,

Do you know anything else about him, like whether he got married?

The only baptism I can find for a John Balcomb in Laughton took place in 1788.

There are other baptisms in the area, like a baptism for a John Balcomb in Heathfield (12 miles away) in 1816, but I can't see any that look like your man.

A search for Balcomb(e)s in Laughton led me to this thread, which mentions a Thomas Balcombe born in 1816 in Laughton. Interestingly, I can't find his baptism either. A gap in the records? Or maybe I'm not looking in the right places...

Hi Queenie,

Thanks for your kind reply.
I'm trying to find a baptism for a John Kingsford Baucomb, who married a Lydia Davies in Liverpool in 1841. According to the MC, he was a Mariner and his father was John Baucomb, Stone Mason. That's all I have on him, and I cannot find anything more on him, after this marriage, but I wondered if he was the John Balcomb, as stated on the Seaman's Ticket, in my initial query. If I could find a baptism for him in 1814 in Laughton, then that would help enormously, hence my post.
Thanks very much,

Kit

Hi, there is a baptism for a John Balcomb at Lewes Jireh Chapel on 26 June 1814 (born 14 November 19813) to Richard and Harriot Balcomb noted that their abode is the parish of Laughton.

It is only a few miles between Lewes and Laughton.

Additionally there are baptisms of Ann 1818 and Samuel 1820 at Lewes Jireh to the same parents.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like he could be the brother of the man mentioned on the thread I linked above:

It seems unlikely that John Balcomb and John Kinsford Baucomb are the same person as Pheno has found a baptism, which states that John’s father was Richard, and John Kinsford consistently went by Baucomb so I think we can, at least for now, discount John Balcomb, the mariner.

Focusing on John Kinsford Baucomb, here is what I have found so far:

He married Lydia Davies on 15th March 1841, by licence, in Liverpool. The licence states that both bride and groom were 21 years and upwards, so John was born before 1820.

They had at least 1 son, Joseph Kinsford Baucomb, who was born on 29th November 1841 and baptised on 15th December 1841 in Liverpool.

Strangely, I cannot find John, Lydia or Joseph on a census.

Even more strangely, there are 2 identical Lydias, who both marry in Liverpool.

Lydia, daughter of Luke Davies, master mariner, marries John Baucomb in 1841. Her residence is Bond St.

Lydia, daughter of Luke Davies, mariner, marries Wiliam Dudley in 1845. Her residence is Bond St.

The only difference is that Lydia marks in 1841 and signs in 1845. Are they 2 different people or the same person? I can only find 1 Lydia, daughter of Luke, born in Liverpool (1814).

Kit, how are you connected to these people? Are you a descendant?

Thanks very much Pheno and Queenie for your kind help and replies.

I very much agree that the Bap on 26/6/1814 at Lewes is for the John Balcomb as on the aforementioned Seaman's Ticket, and so it can't be John Kingsford Baucomb.

I've been trying to find a Bap for John Kingsford Baucomb for quite a while, without success, but at least I now know that he wasn't the John Balcomb born in Laughton in 1813/4.

I'm descended from 1845 marriage, but am still researching this.

Thanks very much again,

Kit
