Does this Hogg belong to you?

From Newcastle Evening Chronicle 23 July 1942
Death of Ex-missionary

Mr John W Hogg (74) a former Baptist missionary and native of South Shields has died at Chester after a long illness.  Ordained as a Baptist minister about 50 years ago he took up missionary duties and worked abroad for 15 years.

The missionary aspect is interesting. The majority of my Roxburgh Hogg’s were agricultural labourers but I did explore a possible link to the Reverend Robert Hogg of Roxburgh, though William Hogg’s (1809) father Andrew.

Link to that discussion. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=748739.18

I couldn’t connect the dots here but I couldn’t discount this Andrew Hogg either.

I have splashed out on a marriage cert from Scotland's People......

Perhaps this is pure coincidence, but there is a marriage between a George R Brown and Mary Elizabeth Stewart Davidson eldest daughter of the late William Davidson, church missionary and Mrs Ayre, 388 Morningside Road, Edinburgh
(Marriage notice in Edinburgh Evening News 2 Sept 1905)

I thought I would check out the marriage between Mary's mum and Mr Ayre and it makes for quite interesting reading!

6th Feb 1896 at 284 Morningside Road, Edinburgh
John A Ayre (insurance clerk, bachelor, 38) to J S Davidson or Hogg (widow, 36)

Jeanie Stewart Davidson or Hogg gives her parents names as David Davidson, annuitant, deceased and Elizabeth Davidson, subsequently Dunn, m.s. Stewart

So we have a date by which John Hogg should be dead.........

I'm going to have to read this a few times - I'm confused. I need to draw a tree and figure this out.

The location is also interesting. Morningside is where a lot of my family lived.

Not a problem at all - I love a good mystery!!!

And the next tangled offshoot is the death of John Andrew Ayre, of 388 Morningside Road, Edinburgh who died 21 Feb 1900.  Confirmation granted to George Martin Ayre, his brother.

So another will that you might want to acquire!

It looks like Jean Davidson may have been a nurse - on the 1911 census there is a Jean Davidson, aged 29, bn Jarrow, working as a sick nurse in a nursing home at 46 Beaumont Street, Marylebone.
