George Blackham 1819-at least 1861 : Heage/Belper : Missing records
« on: Tuesday 10 August 21 14:38 BST (UK) »
Poor little George Blackham. Baptised 8 March 1819 Belper, mother Matilda (née Storer) dies in 1822, father Matthew gets transported to Tasmania in 1823...

Other than his baptism, the only record I can find of George is on the 1861 census, aged 42, a Boatman at Heage. There's a possible bmd death 1876 at Belper but says aged 60.

I'd like to find out where George Blackham was between 1823 and 1861. Grandparents on his mothers side both dead by 1841. Not with grandparents on father's side. Couldn't see any entry in the Belper work house, and no trace on 1841 or 1851...

Any idea's please ? Thanks.

Not aware of any siblings born in the UK. Father remarried and had children in Tasmania.

Hi,

This could be him 17th Sept. 1859, have checked Newspaper report and wording exactly same, with no further details.

Am I right in thinking that with no parents and aged 4, he should have been admitted to the local (Belper) workhouse ?

By 1841 he would be 25 so likely discharged and hiding on a census page somewhere...

ADDED - Burial
George Blackham
Age 60
Burial  25 Feb 1876
Belper Cemetery

Thanks - is the burial at Broadholm cemetery or St Peter's ?

In the absence of a church name I would assume that 'Belper Cemetery' was the municipal Cemetery

Not convinced but I thought I would mention it.

There is a George Black**a* on the 1841, listed as a male servant at Osmaston Hall, age 26 born in county.
Class: HO107/192; Book 1/4 p 3
