Farm/Property location Burnsfield, New Spynie, Scotland
« on: Thursday 12 August 21 08:08 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I am searching for a place where my ancestors lived/worked C. 1716-1777. The place is Burnsfield, New Spynie, Scotland .I have tried Scotlands Maps but no record. I am thinking that it might have been near or part of Westfield as birth records show a birth at Westfield then Burnsfield then Westfield. My ancestors were Lodovich Paul great g/father x 6 and his son James. On James' headstone it is spelt Bwrnsfield.

It is not listed in the Directory of Land Ownership under Spynie (1773). Property under 10 acres were not recorded in Moray so it must have been a small holding aka a croft.

Hi William,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

James Paul still showing at Burnsfield in the Farm Horse Tax Rolls for 1797-98 https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls/farm-horse-tax-rolls-1797-1798/farm-horse-tax-1797-1798-volume-04/213

This will tell you how many horses he was being taxed on  ::) but doesn't help with location.

The Gazetteer says this:
There seems to have been a Culdee church in the NW corner of the parish. It is referred to in the beginning of the 13th century as veterem ecclesiam de Kyntra. No trace of the building has remained for a long time, but the churchyard attached, which stood in the centre of the eastern margin field called Chapelfield, on the home farm of Westfield, was preserved until a comparatively recent date. On the S side of Quarrywood Hill are the remains of a Celtic hill strength, known locally as the Danish Camp.

Make of this lot what you will:
1797 horse tax as above Burnsfield is in Quarrywood Parish, between Sourydale and Starryward.
Think I saw a properties to let ad about this time with descriptions, will need to check that and post further.

1851census Birnie Enumeration District 1.
Schedule 5 is Burnfield. (McKenzie)
Schedule 6 is the manse.

1859 Mary Wink, Burnfield wins a prize at school.

1861census Ed1 sch3 is Mary Wink and family, which includes Ann Henry Mrs Winks Auntie.
Schedule 9 is the manse.
1864 Ann Henry, 84y dies at Burnfield Cottage, Birnie. Widow of John Paul, Kirkton, Alves.

And just to complicate further in 1841 John and Ann Paul were living at Allerburn, Elgin.
