Bromsgrove burial….
« on: Thursday 12 August 21 15:42 BST (UK) »
Hi
I've asked this before but haven't been able to find what I'm looking for without going to The Hub or purchasing a CD🤦‍♀️

It's a really simple request …
Has anyone got straight forward access to Bromsgrove burial records please..?

I'm looking for my Gt Gt Grandmothers grave..
She was Elizabeth Sarah Stiles (nee Fortnam)
Died March 1938 - on a Sunday and her funeral was held at All Saints Church on a Wednesday exact dates unknown!

I have lots of details including cuttings from the local paper ,detailing her long life as a local business woman, info about her funeral - who was there/who sent floral tributes -  and who she left her wealth to ..but not where she was laid to rest.
Her husband George Albert predeceased her in June 1907, but again I can't find anything about where he ended up - but presume they are together. They also lost 2 young children but again no trace of where they are!

I've been trying to solve this mystery for years - even walked round All Saints cemetery .
My late Mum used to recall visiting the grave, walking up some steps so I'm presuming it was this one.🤷‍♀️

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Is she Elizabeth Sarah Stiles of the RoeBuck Inn, High Street, Bromsgrove? She died 27th February 1938 which was a Sunday. Wednesday was 2nd March. You can get her will for £1.50. Also her husband left a will. He died 8th April 1907

Yes that’s her !
Might have guessed her March Sunday would have been in February !
I’ve got the abridged version of her will as reported in the local paper but I will definitely order a copy as it may well state what her wishes were.
Thank you

You'd walk up steps to get to St John's church (by where the market used to be, is it Waitrose there now?), so maybe they are there, then from the graveyard you'd cross the road to the cemetery, which would have been having burials in 1907.

Where on the High St was the Roebuck?  (can't quite place it, but the name is familiar). - ok, I know where it was,  have had a look at some photos online, at the 'top of the town'.  :)

Thank you!
I’ve gone up those steps on  my search.. but I’ve never gone over into the other cemetery 🤔
That’ll be my next trip !

The Roebuck was at the bottom of High Street sort of on the junction .. it’s listed as being number 9 High Street.  I do have some photos - family also owned The George Hotel I think at the same time.
Elizabeth was a very very astute business woman - way ahead of her time.

So I’ve got copies of both wills - interesting to read but no mention of funeral requests etc….

Will keep trying !
