Black and Tans register
« on: Thursday 12 August 21 15:52 BST (UK) »
I understand that there is a book at Kew Record Office with names of men who joined the Black and Tans, and wondered if any member goes to the Record Office and could check if there is a name I am looking for in that book.  Many thanks.

The service records for the Royal Irish Constabulary 1816 - 1922 are also available on findmypast, likely available to search at your local library.  Otherwise you could post your man's details here or on the Armed Forces Board.

I can't see him at all in the R.I.C., but this looks like him during WWI.

William Cormack Burnett born 12 August 1899 at Machar, Aberdeen.  His father was Robert Burnett of 15 Allan Street, Aberdeen.  William was a ship-wright by trade.

4th April 1921: Discharged.  Sapper with No. 1 Field Company Royal Engineers (Highland Division) Defence Force.

14th April 1921: Recalled for 90 days emergency service to 51st Highland Division, Royal Engineers Defence Corps.

4th July 1921 Discharged.

William was 5ft 2ins in height, a fresh complexion with dark hair and blue eyes.
Added:  He also had a tattoo on his forearm of a hand clutching a heart

Do you have his Army records from WWI? There are loads of them from 1917 onwards, although many are repeated.

In case you haven't seen them, there are a few news articles in 1926 indicating he is still at 15 Allan St., and a ship's carpenter for the British Argentine Steamship Line.

Ploughing through those records  :-\ but at least I have found him in Ireland

William Cormack Burnett first enlisted 19th July 1917.  20th December 1917 finds his company attached to the 5th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles.  Suffered an injury at Curragh, near Kildare, discharged due to poor eyesight and painful legs.  Transferred to Reserves / civilian duties at Aberdeen where he worked for Hall, Russell & Co., shipbuilders until recalled.
