Benjamin Briggs and family
« on: Thursday 12 August 21 18:51 BST (UK) »
Benjamin Briggs 1762 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire and died 1829 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. He married Ann Brown (Bown) 1 November 1785 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.  1757 in Leicestershire and died 1842 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire

Their children were all baptised St Mary, Nottingham

Elisabeth Briggs 1791
Mary Ann Briggs 1797
Benjamin Briggs 1799 died 1883 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.
John Brown Briggs 1801
Thomas Briggs 1803

In 1841 Annie 85 is living in Wood Street, Earl Shilton, listed as Ind. with a William Thompson and others. So after they were married I can only assume they moved to Nottingham, moving back to Leicestershire by 1829.

My direct line is their son Benjamin 1799, his wife noted on census returns Jane (Maiden name Clarke on their younger children’s births), but no marriage.  She was born 1800 in Nottinghamshire and died 1883 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. I have all their their information; on 1851 to 1881 census returns he is born in Nottingham.

I can not find anything on the other children, one possible exception is Thomas 1803, he may have remained in Nottingham and married in the County in 1828, unfortunately family search census returns just state he was born in Nottinghamshire. (Below)

I wonder if anyone can add anything.

Benjamin Briggs burial/death shown as 8th February 1829 aged 67 years. Ann shown as 22nd September 1842 aged 85 years.
There is quite a big gap between their marriage in 1785 and Elizabeth born 1791.
There is a marriage for a Mary Ann Briggs on Family search 20th October 1829 to George Barratt in Earl Shilton.
A John Briggs 1801 died aged 28 years 26th August 1829 Earl shilton.
Regards.

Hi Paco, many thanks for your response. Sadly I have never managed to find any baptisms between 1785 & 1790 but they probably moved to Nottingham in that period.

The marriage of  Mary Briggs to George Barratt Earl Shilton, Leicestershire20 Oct 1829, is a good possibility despite the lack of a middle name, I have not found any other marriages or a burial, I will follow that through.

The burial of John Briggs born 1801 died aged 28 years 26th August 1829 Earl Shilton, also looks very likely. Thank you.

I have now found the following:

Mary Ann Briggs married Joseph Clarke Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire 1 Feb 1819

Baptism Earl Shilton, Leicestershire = Elizabeth Clarke 2 Feb 1823

1851
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGFS-TWM

1861 Wood St. Earl Shilton
CLARKE   Joseph   Head   73   Framework Knitter   LEI   Earl Shilton
CLARKE   Mary Ann   Wife   64   Framework Knitter   LEI   Earl Shilton

CLARKE, JOSEPH    death   75
GRO Reference: 1863  D Quarter in HINCKLEY  Volume 07A  Page 47

In 1871 this is, I think, what confirmed the marriage.

CLARKE   Mary Ann   Mother   W   F   74   Infirm   NTT   Nottingham

With her daughter plus two children under 13
UNDERWOOD   Elizabeth   Head   M   F   48   Seams Stockings   LEI   Earl Shilton

Elizabeth’s daughter plus her two children.
TIBBETT   Mary Ann   Dau   M   F   27   Shoefitter   LEI   Earl Shilton

Mary Anne Clarke Age: 77
Death or Burial Date:   30 Jan 1875
Death or Burial Place:   Earl Shilton, Leicestershire

So it looks as though the family may have been in Earl Shilton much earlier than I imagined?

I will need to have another looka at Elizabeth and Thomas.
