Robert Ainsworth. When/how did he get to Australia?
« on: Sunday 15 August 21 11:28 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find when/how Robert Ainsworth arrived in Australia. What i know is that he was born 1868 West Ham, England, married 1899 Mary Ann Lowe in Victoria, and died 1943 in Victoria. His parents as listed in Vic BDM Historical on-line are William and Selina Reed Davey. Haven't been able to find any clues on how he arrived so any help is appreciated.

There is a section on the Vic BDM document where the informant's response to a family history question can be recorded.   That question basically seeks to know how long the deceased has lived in Australia, and in which states..

He is still in West Ham in 1881 as he appears with his parents in the census, so that narrows down the dates he emigrated.

There is a record on FindMyPast for Robert Ainsworth departing London 21 July 1885 and arriving Brisbane 23 September 1885 on the Duke of Buccleuch. There's a further record of R Ainsworth on the Victorian inward passenger lists for March 1889 onboard the Australasian. Age given for both records are possible.

Not answering your query but......

I wondered whether you had seen the death notices for Robert in 1943.
There are a number of them in The Age and a lot of family members listed including his grandchildren and a number of foster children too.

Seems as if he had a second given name.  William.

Thanks one and all for your contributions. I'm satisfied with the dates/ship given earlier by Middlesbrough.

There is no guarantee though that it is Robert Ainsworth as it just gives the initial. I saw that record earlier but as it described him as "gentleman" and he'd only be 21 wasn't sure.

  :)

R AINSWORTH in Sydney, NSW in the 1880s ....  there were several.  For example,
R. AINSWORTH, Market St, importer .

R .... Yes could be Robert .... but could be:
Richard
Rodger
Reynold
Roman
Ronald
Reagan
And many other given names...

There are excellent free to search live links to online passenger lists included at the Resources sub-boards at RootsChat Australia Resources Board.
