Help with Sligo place name (image)
« on: Sunday 15 August 21 23:37 BST (UK) »
Hi Sligo experts,

Hoping for some help on the attached image. This is from an 1855 birth certificate from Annan Scotland. Catherine Fallon/Fallen is the mum, the cert states she is 17, this is her first child. Birth certs from this year include place of birth. I can read “Co of Sligo, Ireland” but not the word before it? Can you help?

Just as background her parents are Thomas Fallon/Fallen and Bridget who may have the maiden surname Lang or Long. This is the couple I am tracing.

I have a fair bit of info on the couple once they are in the UK but I trying to trace their origins.

Thanks,
Pam

I think the word that looks like Cross is “Co of” as in County of. Her husband has “Co of Cavan” after the place name.

It looks like a small word?

Pam,you could request a clearer copy of the certificate, and hope that the place name is more legible. Maybe specify that is the section you can’t read as the writing is too feint.

Presumably her 1861 census pob is simply “Ireland” or “Sligo” as is often the case?

I looked through this list for townlands in Sligo that started with "S" and came to the same conclusion: "Sooey"

Hi Ruskie,
Yes all other records I’ve found are simply Ireland. This is my glimmer of hope. I’ll email and see if they can look it up. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks,
Pam

Thank you oldohiohome and Dublin1850. I’ll look around the page to see if there are any “oo” to compare.

Thanks,
Pam

I don't think the registray spelled it Sooey. It looks more like Suie. As dublin1850 said 'a version of Sooey.' The spelling of place names and surnames vary greatly on the records, but usually sound about the same if you pronounce them.
Same with Fallon and Fallen.
