John Finch Pioneer settler in New Zealand
« on: Friday 20 August 21 09:07 BST (UK) »
I am researching John Finch b 1813 Derbyshire who sailed to Dunedin with his wife Elizabeth Shaw and family on board the John Wickliffe. Contacts in NZ suggest that John's trip was sponsored by a William Henry Cutten. I am curious how he came into contact with this man. The 1841 census shows John in Etwall Derbyshire and his daughter Emma is baptised in Islington in November 1847 days before he sailed. I am trying to discover if he came to London specifically to board the ship or if he moved there earlier and heard about the trip and met Cutten while he was there. To discover that I need to find out what he was doing between 1841 and 1847. Has anyone any ideas how I might do this. I've tried the electoral rolls without success.

I see on the passenger list Samuel was a year older than Emma. Where was he baptised?

Is this his registration?

FINCH, SAMUL       SHAW
GRO Reference: 1843  M Quarter in BURTON UPON TRENT UNION  Volume 17  Page 17

Perhaps this is Emma’s birth?

FINCH, EMMA       SHAW
GRO Reference: 1845  J Quarter in STEPNEY  Volume 02  Page 467

If so, the Finches went to London between those two events.

There was a son Samuel registered March Q 1843 Burton-on Trent mmn Shaw.
Burton-on Trent was the Reg. Dist. for Etwall.
Emma was registered in Stepney Jan Q 1845 so you have roughly an 18 month
window for when he moved to London.
I see mckha489 beat me to it.

Was this the passenger list you saw mckha?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:John_Wickliffe_(ship%2C_14_Dec_1847)#John_Wickliffe_Passenger_List

John and his family start at number 047 and William is number 073.  So it seems that they travelled on the same ship.
