Michael Power, born Barony, Scotland C1828-30
« on: Friday 20 August 21 12:13 BST (UK) »
Have tried all the main big family history sites, even paid a researcher who did find my Gt Grandfather, who on enlisting 1853, stated his age as 24.5, and born in Barony, Lanarkshire. I cannot find his birth ANYWHERE.

I do know some of his Military background, in India, and that his Father was a Michael Power also. He married a Mary Ann Carroll in India 11 June 1862, St Thomas Mount. Haven't even started with Mary Ann as her birth is vague, 1847 but her father is a John Carroll.

Michael & Mary Ann had 3 children in India, Charles 1865 -1868, Michael 1867-1931 and Agnes who became a Nun, 1872

Any bright ideas will be gratefully received, from a First timer here!!

Scotland's People site https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk under the "Church Registers you can search Catholic bmd but these are far from being complete.  I see no Michael.

In the 1841 Census there is only one entry and he is 28 and in the Army listed with everyone else in the barracks.

Don, thank you for the reply, and the speed in which you did.

Sadly, I had already found those records, got really excited with the Barracks but the age is wrong. Also found a Power family but no Michael!

I will find him one day, somehow.  Thanks for trying to help.

The only children recorded in Scotland before 1855 born to a Michael Power are:

-  Anne Georgina recorded in the Glasgow RC records 1849, daughter of Michael Power and Anne Wallace Scott.
- Mary Ann recorded in the Church of Scotland records for Aucterderran in Fife 1847, daughter of Michael Power and Agnes Mitchell. This Michael Power was a miner born in Waterford, Ireland.

It is possible that your Michael was born in Ireland and not in Barony at all.

I notice that a Corporal Michael Power of the 89th Foot was slightly wounded in the Crimea on 2nd August 1855.

Any clues on father Michael's occupation?

With what you have found GR2, wondering if this could maybe connect for Michael Jnr.'s father? https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8805682

Poppy, Michael Power's age at marriage and death both indicate a birth year c. 1830 So his birth year pretty consistent.

He stated Barony Lanark for his birth as you mentioned. There is a RC 1830 batism in Waterford, Ireland to parents Michael Power and Maria Connolly that would fit so well. Could he have been born in Lanarkshire and baptised back in Ireland I wonder?

A topic from 1864 "Catholic churches near Barony 1864".

A reply contains a link to pages about Barony on GENUKI. Click on "Nearby churches" tab for a map showing churches with coloured markers according to denomination. Clicking on a marker brings up church's  name + foundation year.

If tiving there in 1820s & 1830s  ahey may have  attended church outside the neighbourhood

The pensioner, Michael Power from Waterford died on 24th February 1851, aged 83. He had served with the 89th as a private, received two clasps to the Peninsular Medal, and started receiving his pension (one and threepence halfpenny) on 12th September 1821. He resided in Waterford after retiring.

The Corporal Michael Power wounded at Sebastopol in 1855 with the 89th is therefore a different person.

My keyboard behaving badly again.
To continue my previous post. I can't correct mistakes.
They may have attended a church outside the neighbourhood or a priest may have visited. Priest might say Mass in a room over a pub or other place as happened in the Scottish town I live in. Priest would baptise babies at home as was done in Ireland.
St. Andrew's, Clyde St. Glasgow built 1816.

Lanarkshire has been in Motherwell Diocese since 1947. I don't know if that includes Barony. List of churches in Motherwell Diocese with foundation years.

As others have said, Michael may have been born in Ireland or somewhere else.
