The Corporal Michael Power wounded at Sebastopol in 1855 with the 89th is therefore a different person.

Yes, I could see that. My point is whether there could be a link between both Michaels (father and son for example. Son joining father's old regiment etc.)

Hard to say though with lack of info.

I notice that a Corporal Michael Power of the 89th Foot was slightly wounded in the Crimea on 2nd August 1855.

Was he definitely the same Michael Power who is the subject of the enquiry? Poppy didn't name his regiment.
89th Foot (the Princess Victoria's) Regiment was an Irish regiment, raised in Dublin 1793. Merged into Irish Fusiliers 1881. Brief history + postings.

A very high proportion of soldiers in the British Army were Irish in 19th century. The same names might recur in regiments.

The Power surname was strong in numbers in County Waterford. 1628 Power households in the county on Grifffith's Valuation (1847-1864), almost 5 times as many as counties with the next highest Power populations, Kilkenny and Tipperary which had 300+ each.
(Irish Ancestors Wizard https://www.johngrenham.com/wizard )  A search for Power in County Waterford on www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation gets over 4,000 results, including landlords/immediate lessors.

Given that Michael Power's year for birth is 1830 (from marriage record) and his last children were born in Madras, this is a possible death for him.

Yes, that looks to be his death, Neale. From what I saw earlier his wife stayed on in India and died there in the early 1900s.

Maidenstone, no Poppy hasn't mentioned a regiment for Michael Power born c 1830. Poppy, would be good to know what that was if you have that detail.

- Mary Ann recorded in the Church of Scotland records for Aucterderran in Fife 1847, daughter of Michael Power and Agnes Mitchell. This Michael Power was a miner born in Waterford, Ireland.

Further to the mining connection. Lead, silver and copper were mined in Waterford and adjacent counties.
Copper Coast (Waterford)

A search for the word mining on Ask about Ireland Learning Zone (for primary children) finds "History of Mining in Waterford" + other mining-related topics.
www.askaboutireland.ie/learning-zone/
It's not surprising that Waterford men went to mining areas in Scotland such as Fife and Lanarkshire. As Power was a common surname in Waterford it's likely many of them became miners.
New Waterford in Canada had mines. Irish and Scottish people went there. There was a mine named Waterford in California.

Hi all,

This is a bit of a long shot but....
There is a family called Rice living in Barony parish on the 1841 Census.
Main Street

Michael Rice   45    Army Pensioner  born Ireland
Agnes Rice       40                                  born Lanarkshire
James Rice      15                                  born outside county
Mart Rice ( Female)  14                        born outside county
John  Rice       12                                    born outside county
Michael Rice ( jnr)  9                             born Lanarkshire
Helen Rice        7                                     born Lanarkshire

Thought I would share this on the off chance Power was not actually Michael's original surname....( having an ancestor myself who enlisted with a false surname ) .
The fact Michael Rice senior is ex-army and the mother of the family is Agnes ( Michael Power's daughter's name ) caught my eye.

Apologies if this is rubbish.

Looby   :)

WOW!!
I posted here as I had run out of ideas, and never expected an answer!!!! The support and help is greatly appreciated.

More detail:- Michael Power transferred from Madras army 4th Battalion Madras Artillery, no: 4363 to Royal Artillery in 1861.  Joined No 6 Battery 17th Brigade of British Army

Married Married Mary A Carroll 11.06.1862 in India.

They had 3 Children:-  Charles 15.10.1865 -  5.01.1868    Michael TJ - 27.11.1867 and Agnes M 24.04.1872 All born in India

Family 'gossip' says Michael was from Waterford area.  I went there, every other grave is a Michael Power!

My Gt Grandfather is so elusive, I have been looking for him on and off since 1995.  even seemingly silly suggestions can help to illiminate people that are wrong!
Thank you everyone
Poppy
