Mills located near Kirkconnel 1800s
« on: Saturday 21 August 21 23:21 BST (UK) »
I am searching for records for Peter Rutherford who may have worked at a mill near Kirkconnel in the early 1800s. Mill may have been owned by John Henderson. Peter married his daughter, Martha 1833, before they left for Canada.
Want to know how and why Peter, born in Redgorton, Perth, travelled to Kirkconnel to work as a stonemason. He was a very successful stonemason, then contractor in Toronto, Ontario (previously known as Canada West). He died in the 1840s in Toronto.

I note the 1833 marriage, which took place at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh.

I also found a birth/baptism record for a Martha in Kirkconnel.
MARTHA HENDERSON   - JOHN HENDERSON/MARION MCKENDERICK 12/02/1815   Kirkconnel

However that Martha is with her parents in 1841 in Kirkconnel?

HENDERSON   John   M   70   Coal Miner   DFS
HENDERSON   Marion   F   64      DFS
HENDERSON   Martha   F   25      DFS
HENDERSON   Margaret   F   21      DFS

Do you know where the Martha who married in 1833 was born?

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Further to my last post there is a marriage in Kirkconnel of a Martha Henderson to a Thomas Stevenson 18th October 1839.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTG9-D59

The two boys would be Martha and Thomas Stevenson's children

Perhaps, janebell (and welcome to Roootschat, by the way :D), you are looking at the wrong Henderson family.

Looby :)

This is the one I saw today that Collin picked up on.  Hence my question.

Which just emphasises the mantra: never believe anything you find online unless it's an image of an original document.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi janebell

Welcome to Rootschat from me too  :)

What do you have to help confirm that the 1812 birth for Peter is the correct one? www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1K2-68Z

I haven't come across anything that gives his birth year or birth place in Canadian records.

Son John born 1839 in Toronto did very well for himself didn't he. Is he your direct line?

From Google Books on John Rutherford www.rootschat.com/links/01quz/

There was also a son Thomas? www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2CB-Q2NZ Burial details www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:276S-8FC

I think there are a couple of early census entries that could fit for Martha's father, Thomas.

In 1841, showing as a Cabinet Maker which fits well with the more general description of Wright www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a151f28f4040b9d6e2b83bb/thos-henderson-1841-midlothian-st-cuthbert-s-1781-?locale=en I am wondering if he is onto a second marriage?

1851 for this family www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5903d963e9379091b1fea8ec/thomas-henderson-1851-midlothian-st-cuthbert-s-1781-?locale=en
