Nellie Eileen Ham
« on: Sunday 22 August 21 06:13 BST (UK) »
1. Where was Nellie Eileen Ham in 1911? - born 21 Oct. 1898 Aldershot (mother Harriet Ellen b Havant 1877 - married Alfred Joseph Ham 1897).
Harriet and Nellie (Kellie) are with the Campion family as boarders in 1901 but I cannot find either Harriet or Nellie in 1911.  I've tried Family Search, Freecen, Ancestry (library), tried Immigration...
2. can't identify a possible marriage or death for Harriet but I know about Nellie following her marriage in 1923 to Henry Cannell
Harriet Ellen was born Brockingdon but also has names of Mason (alias for father George) Herrington (Amos was stepfather and is named on her marriage cert.)
Would be grateful for possible leads.

There's a Nellie Eileen HAME age 12 born Aldershot living in Battersea with a Miss Esther Josephine Dodd,a teacher.
Nellie is described as a boarder, but she could have been in service ? Indexed as HARRIE

Not conclusive as far as her mother's whereabouts  :-\

(Miss Dodd has a wry sense of humour)

Thanks so much for replies:
I have various certificates including Harriet's marriage to Alfred (Joseph) Ham who I can't find either after 1900 although there is an Alfred Ham as a crew member on a Navy? boat who was married.
Intrigued with the Amos Mark Alfred Ham... but why were Harriet and Nellie as boarders with the Campion family in 1901? As far as I can see there is no family tie- up. Maybe she went back to Alfred but things deteriorated after Amos' death - he was named for Harriet's step-father.

Nellie Eileen -as  boarder - I saw that (Ancestry?) but didn't think about the fact that she might have been a servant... one step forward possibly. She can't have had much schooling but according to her daughter, she was a shorthand -typist in the Lord Mayor of London's office... I don't believe that but she could have been an office clerk. Tried to find info about the Lord's office but nothing helpful.

At what point would Nellie be on the Electoral rolls please? 20 or 21?
I was a bit intrigued that she didn't have her daughter till 1935...

Representation of the People Act 1918
In 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed which allowed women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification to vote. Although 8.5 million women met this criteria, it was only about two-thirds of the total population of women in the UK.

Equal Franchise Act 1928
It was not until the Equal Franchise Act of 1928 that women over 21 were able to vote and women finally achieved the same voting rights as men. This act increased the number of women eligible to vote to 15 million.

I discovered on Harriet's mother's 1911 Census that she had had one living child but was now dead so I am assuming that was Harriet; can't find Harriet's death anywhere... especially after son Amos Mark Alfred Ham died aged 10 weeks...
No further ahead!
