He possibly joined the Royal Engineers because his older brother had done so.

I don't think the army will have paid for the board of wives & children, more likely money was sent home to them. When regiments were sent abroad, a certain number of families would go with them 'on the strength' and would be housed. An enlisted man would need to get permission to marry from his commanding officer. You sometimes come across 2 marriages for the same couple when it seems that permission hadn't been sought to start with, so there had to be a second one to enter in the army records.

Well I've just read about the army accommodation - marvellous info thank you and very interesting. I wish I'd had the Indian stuff in 2006 when I helped an elderly friend write his memoir!

Are there any Boer War records online please? And where would Alfred's attestation be, if it is in existence?

the army record  including attestation came from Findmypast, it may be on Ancestry as well. You could ask about Boer war records on the military board.
