Which Army Regiments were in Chatham Barracks Kent in 1901?
« on: Sunday 22 August 21 20:27 BST (UK) »
We have a relative in the 1901 census in the Chatham Barracks, Kent.
Does anybody know which Regiment was stationed there at that time?
Our relative is called Goodman Yates and hails from Bolton, Lancashire. He was 18 in 1901 and listed as an infantry soldier (possibly Lancashire Fusiliers)

Hello & welcome
According to his pension details he was indeed Lancs. Fusiliers.
Also on his Canadian attestation he states ex Lancs. Fusiliers (20th).
12 years service.
There was no 20th. Btn. until WW1 so may be a reference to the Lancs.
fusiliers originally being the 20th. Regt. of Foot.
It then goes on to say 26th. Btn. 18 years service?
In 1901 they had 4 Btns. the 1st. was in S. Africa.
2nd. Crete & Malta.
Your man must have been in one of the other 2.
His service record is on FindMyPast.

He started off in 4th Battalion and was posted to 3rd in July 1901.

So it was the 4th. at Chatham.
I believe it was the 3rd. that went to S.A. in 1901 so that probably
prompted the transfer.
Well done ShaunJ.

He didn't go to South Africa. He was posted to Malta in July 1901, then to Barbados in November 1901, back to UK in 1904/5 then Malta and Egypt. Back to UK again in 1906.

Many thanks to ShaunJ and Jim1 for your help - we have got his WW1 records from Ancestry so we need to fill the gap between 1906 and 1914 when he enlisted in CANADA. We have also found an address (in his records) for Kansas City dated 11/6/1928, could he have emigrated to the States?

As Jim says his British army service records are available on FindMyPast, and also Fold 3. They show that he served at home (i.e the British Isles) from 1906 until his discharge on 17 July 1912.

Tracking his movements from there, he marries in Bristol in October 1912 and then seems to have travelled to the US: there is a record of him arriving back in the UK from Portland, Maine in December 1912. Then to Canada in 1913. There are records of him having applied for a homestead grant in Saskatchewan in 1909, and receiving the grant in November 1912.

There is a record of him in a Kansas City directory for 1928, so yes he was there.

He gives an address of E. 15th. St. Kansas City in 1928.
His wife remained in the UK until 1919 when he applied for
her to join him in Canada.
