Carroll Family, Brigaitte, Calton Gorbals
« on: Monday 23 August 21 17:03 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a family connection to the Carrolls originally from King Street (of Trongate) or Ballater Street and possibly the Calton. Patrick Carroll was my grandfather who was married to Ellen Holmes and had six or more children who were baptised in St Andrews Cathedral Clyde Street (I have seen their names in the the churches records) My grandfather had a nephew named James who was also known as Tony Carroll and he played for Belfast Celtic and Leicester. My grandfather's daughter Anne married and her marriage name was Keelan and she stayed in Ballater Street. Apart from this information I have no other knowledge of the family in the Glasgow area. If anyone can help in my search I would be very grateful. Thanks

Hi jollys

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

What records have you looked at so far? The place to check on BMD registrations is on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  For example, you could check the marriage of Patrick Carroll ad Ellen Holmes (1884 in Blythswood). This will give you enough details such as their parents' names to help you work back to the next generation.

Have you looked for the family in census entries? You have some key addresses it seems. Is this from census entries or BMD registrations?

Hi Monica, I should have written that Patrick and Ellen were my great grandparents and Patrick my grandfather was their first child, I have looked at the census for various years and found several pieces of information including a piece which indicated that Ellen died in Saint Joseph's Home in the Garngad. My grandfather came to Dundee around 1898 and married Mary Anne Flood in 1900 in Saint Mary's Church Lochee an area which housed hundreds of families of Irish origin who mostly worked in Cox's Mill the largest jute mill in the world. Connections with family members in Glasgow were eventually lost  apart from his sister Anne (Annie) to those who knew her. I was hoping that my post might be read by someone who knew they had relatives in Dundee called Carroll but who didn't know much about them but were curious to find out. Thanks Monica any more information you could provide would be appreciated.

Hi, I came across a few bits that may help.
Birth:
Patrick Holmes/Carroll
born: 12 Nov 1879  illegit)
30 Princes St. Reg Dist:Blackfriars

In 1881 census Ellen is living in Blackfriars Reg Dist with Patrick and her parents. At this time it lists her age as 18 and Patrick 1. I do not know if Ellen & Patrick had any other children before they married in 1884 but there are 5 other Holmes' births pre 1884- Agnes 1881, Sarah 1882, Annie 1882, William 1882 & Mary 1883.

Patrick Carroll age:20 f:Patrick Carroll(deceased) m: Ellen Holmes
Married: 2 June 1884 St Mary's Chapel
Mary Ann Flood age: 18  f: Michael Flood m: Isabella Gallocher

The only death I could find for Ellen(Holmes) Carroll is 1915 in Lochee age: 59 none in Gargad. Do not know if this is related to you but 1911 there is a death for Helen Carroll age: 0 in Lochee.

Hope this helps, Kim

Thanks, Patrick and Ellen married in 1884 when she was 21 and my grandfather Patrick came through to Dundee to district called Lochee and stayed in an enclave nicknamed Tipperary owing to the amount of Irish staying there. He took part in WW1 and was gassed. He died in 1947 and Mary Anne died in 1952.The only relative I can remember visiting from Glasgow was my grandfather's sister Anne married name Keelan who stayed in Ballater Street. I have no more information on the Carroll family in Glasgow.

There is a marriage that might be Annie's:

Annie Carroll and George Walls Keelan, 1932 in Glasgow/Calton.

It can be viewed online on SP which would let you confirm it is the corrent marriage.

From the index, she died in Glasgow in 1988.

Patrick Carrol 12
William Carrol 9...married Margaret Ward?
James Carrol 7
Michael Carrol 3
Ellen Carrol 1...died in 1892

And 1901:

Ellen Holme Carroll's death does show on SP in 1944 in Provan, aged 82. Her death cert would let you confirm whether husband Patrick was still alive or deceased.
