If you had a name it would be interesting to see if there were any reports in the newspapers. Although as mentioned, most reports around this time seem to be for false reporting.

The baby girl   Mary  died aged 3 days  old   and i will load the cert .
If anyone could find that  it would be   great as i v looked   for a long time ,       perhaps its just not there to find .

Such a horrible story that i thought it would    possibly be in the papers.

Unfortunately mother and baby deaths all to common in those days.

I can't see any specific references to their deaths in the newspapers, however there is the widely reported deaths of the children of John PENMAN after attending the wedding of his daughter. The wedding was on 22 Feb 1892.

This detailed item also mentions earlier deaths in another family.

Of course it may be a coincidence, but strange that they should happen around the same time and place as your deaths.

Tragedy upon tragedy.

Is this the birth registration for the baby?

Mary SMITH, Mitta Mitta,  15850 / 1892

It may well have not reached the Registrar General's Office until long after the burial of Mother and daughter, but the two death registrations in sequential order would have provided all the information needed to avoid an investigation, afterall baby Mary's mum was very ill - peritonitis is still a very serious medical emergency today. And her baby's diagnosis - Atrophy - can have dire consequences even now.  I can conjecture that perhaps Baby Mary may have been born early, perhaps the peritonitis brought on Mary Ann's labour.

ADD the birth registration may note if there was any investigation as to any delay in the registration process.

Yes its the baby  death .
I had hoped to snag any info on   who the  Father     was    from reading Newspaper articles if any   had been found,   that    was the main reason i was looking for  articles  about  this  particular   story .
Been a lot of conjecture  but no facts.

I cannot see any reason for any  enquiry or  investigation on delayed registrations coming about based on those two deaths as they don't appear to have been delayed in any way.  Dr Edward Harkness had been recently approved as the government medico in the area.  It seems likely he was present at or very shortly after baby's birth,  as he last saw the baby on 24 February.

Baby's father would only be on the birth registration IF he was the informant,  but if you are keen to follow through, that would be a record to consider.

Tragedy upon tragedy.
