Joseph WOODLAND, born 1829, Taunton, Somerset.
« on: Thursday 26 August 21 11:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Joseph WOODLAND disembarked as an "Exile" at Williamstown from the Thomas Arbuthnot in May 1847 and started work immediately for Mr. Roadknight of Geelong as a Shepherd.   There follows an interval of some 8 years before he is sentenced on 20/06/1856 at Ballarat to 2 years hard labour for stealing a watch.   Also a possible further offence for stealing a whip in 1860 but no other detail.     He may have died in 1882.

His parents were Thomas WOODLAND and Rebecca WOODLAND (nee COLES)....his father died in 1843, his mother re-married 1846, James SEARLE the new husband

He had two brothers transported to VDL in 1844 James (born 1824) and Thomas Coles WOODLAND (born 1823), the latter migrated to Melbourne in 1854.   All three brothers were convicted for being connected in the same offence in January 1844.

Could anyone help with more details about Joseph WOODLAND after he was transported, marriage, children, death etc. and if, along the way, information about Thomas Coles WOODLAND emerges I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you,

BAC3

Thank you JM,

Almost certainly the death in 1882 is correct.

Could Thomas have returned to Tassie?

On 2 Dec 1880 a Thomas Woodland (aka John?) died near Ellerslie (abt 9 miles NE from Conara and north of Campbell Town!). He was estimated to have been 50-60 years.

Jo,

Thank you very much for the references , which I have added, with that of "majm" earlier, to my research as part of his profile.   I am extremely grateful for your help.

Hello Tree Spirit,

Thank you for the research.

I have a major problem.........there were two other convicts named Thomas WOODLAND who arrived in VDL in 1843 and 1844, both fitting the 50 to 60 age range at death.   However, and I must apologise for not making this clear originally, convict detail for Thomas Coles WOODLAND is recorded as Thomas COLES.   He was known by the former in familial and newspaper circumstances and thus a slight fixation on my part for being careless!!!

In regard to the latter name there are no entries in the Tasmanian Archives as far as I can see that would be appropriate.

Thank you again,

BAC3

I would not rule him out just yet, because didn't your James Woodland die in Campbell Town?
