William L Baxter "Edinburgh Angus Club"

I had, until recently, a solid silver medal given to William L Baxter for high achievement in Latin at an academy in Brechin, Scotland dated 1851/52. So far I have been unable to find anything about him. The medal has come down the family via my mother's side - McKibben, McLaughin - but I can't find anything which leads back to him. I recently presented the medal to the "Edinburgh Angus Club" who presented it originally, but they can't help. Contacting the school got me nowhere. I was still hoping to be able to trace the family link.

Anyone got any ides as to where to go ?

The most likely one I can find is a William Linton Baxter, born, 1836, Dundee, son of Alexander Baxter & Jean Carrie. (possibly Durie)

William died Careston, Brechin, 1885, age 49, MMN Durie

Cannot find any marriages for him in Scotland.

This only scottish census that he appears on is 1881, age 44 in Careston. He is a Minister of Careston Parish living in the manse with 2 servants, an Anne Walker, age 58 & a Margaret Smith, age 16.

Correction: He does appear on 1871 as William C in Careston.

The Brechin Advertiser gives a list of prize-winners on 3rd August 1852:

"Latin, 5th Class, William Baxter, Angus Club Medal".

He had an elder sister, Jean Allan Baxter, born 1833, Brechin. Her married name was Carruthers & she died 1885, in Dryfesdale, Dumfries. She married William Carruthers, 1857, Heriot & Warriston, which is near Edinburgh.

William L Baxter set up a bursary at Aberdeen University:

23. Linton.

Founded in 1885, by the Rev. William Linton Baxter, M.A.,
Minister of the Parish of Careston, Forfarshire, in memory of
the Rev. William Linton, sometime Rector of the Grammar
School of Brechin. One Bursary of the annual value of £15 or
thereby, tenable for four years, " to enable a young man to be
educated at said University, and to obtain the degree of Master
of Arts, to be competed for at the regular Competition, to be held
only on the conditions that he who gains it sustains a moral
character and makes progress in the classes satisfactory to the
Senatus ".

This ref looks to be for Rev Linton after whom William Linton Baxter may have been named after?
