Hi All

WOW, having just turned my computer on after the weekend (my work machine) I find more information than I have found in years. Kloumann suggests working backwards from my mother but I only got back to McKibben then McLaughlin but they all seemed to be in an area within 50 miles of Moffat, where I know my great grandma lived (I met her aged 90 something, died at 98 so no telegram). That is why I thought searching the other way may produce results but it would appear that is just as much of a dead end. Having since presented the medal to the Edinburgh Angus Club, they inform me that it is now the oldest in their collection and they were very pleased to receive it.

Definitely the the right geographical area. Applegarth is only 16 mls from Moffat. How far back were the McKibbens & McLaughlins? Can see McGibbons in the Moffat area around 1911 but no McKibbens.

Hi Kloumann,

Early 1800s, but because the date on the medal was 1851/52 I thought I had hit a dead end. I think I'm going to have to investigate marriage links later to see if I can link back that way. The only worry is that William died unmarried so did the medal become "misappropriated" and it wasn't a family tie ? My mother was a very honest person and was extremely proud of her relative's achievement. I would hate to think she had been mislead by someone further back up the family tree. With not much more than 120 years (when I acquired it) to look through it doesn't give a lot of options in any family tree.

The medal would not have found its way to the Dumfries area until after his death in 1885 unless he gave it to one of his nephews or nieces while he was still alive.

Hi Kloumann,

I will have another look through my mother's side relatives, but I can't see that the medal would be something he would want to give away - it was personally engraved with his name, so I suspect it must have passed on after his death. I wonder if he left it in his will ? That might help if I can find a copy. I'm busy preparing for an important business meeting next week (hence the working Bank Holiday) so it will probably have to wait until later next week. Thanks for your help so far.
