Henry's family indexed as "LAXTON" in 1861 and 1871 census returns.

1871 - St Luke, Holborn, London
LAXTON (sic) Henry Thomas - 17 yrs - Porter - born St Botolph, Bishopgate
... with parents Joseph and Mary,  and siblings including Alice Frances.

Found this...

https://www.myheritage.com/names/joseph_loxton

Joseph Loxton, 1828 - 1915

Joseph Loxton was born in month 1828, at birth place , to Gideon Loxton and Mary Loxton (born Sayer) .
Gideon was born on February 28 1800, in Coxley, Somersetshire, England.
Mary was born in 1800, in Cullompton, Devon, England.
Joseph had 6 siblings: Elizabeth Anne Loxton , Ellen Loxton and 4 other siblings .
Joseph married Mary Loxton (born Copsey) in 1857, at age 28.
Mary was born circa 1825, in Bath, Somerset, England.
They had 5 children: Alice Frances Loxton , Mary Sarah Loxton and 3 other children .
Joseph lived in 1871, at address .
Joseph passed away in month 1915, at age 86 at death place

Minniehaha.

There is an error in above with the year of marriage - "1857" ... should read as 1851) :  [Didn't check other info ... just that marriage date caught my attention and they had had at least two children born before 1857  ;D ]

Joseph LOXTON  m. Mary COPSEY - 8 September 1851 at St Luke Church, Chelsea, London :

And also in various other electoral rolls, though 1890 is the only year I see the 2 names. The Henry at Masterton seems to be there until c1900, then at Bay of Islands, Northland.

There is also this ad from his sister in 1908:
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19080222.2.3.5?items_per_page=10&phrase=2&query=henry+thomas+loxton&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA

Clarification of electoral info :

This chap, (and I'm certain there's only one of that name), obviously moved around a lot.

*   Immigrant to Dunedin - 1874 (aged 20 - Labourer)

*   Last heard of "ten years since" at Invercargill (advert. placed in 1892)

*   1890 / 1896  ... e/rolls ... settler - residing at Alfredton :

*   1905-06 - two entries in e/rolls - 1.   Waikato Roll - at Waharoa, contractor (not noted as being removed from roll)     2.   Waitemata (Auckland) Roll - at Taupaki - occupation-- gumdigger.*

*   1911 and 1919 rolls ... as given previously  ( at Waihopo -occupation -- gumdigger)*

[* 1908 advert. says .. "last heard of at Auckland goldfields"  ...  ??   ]

[The sister - Alice Frances LOXTON seems an interesting character ??    ;D

I'm guessing that she supplied the information to immigration authorities for her passage to New Zealand in 1903 ?

There were two passenger lists to check - the NZ Immigration one, plus that of the shipping line.

In both instances she is found as ... "Mrs A. F. LOXTON - Housewife".
"Housewife"  suggests that she is a married woman ??

Looks like though, she was the last of Joseph and Mary LOXTON's children to leave the nest.  She's the only child living with her parents 1881 to 1901.    She was variously employed as a silver worker (smith) and later as an embroiderer/pearl maker.   At all times described as "single".  ::)
I wonder what attracted her to New Zealand and if she used "the housewife" ploy to gain a subsidised passage ?    And wonder too why she waited until 1908 to go in search of her brother ?? ]   ;)

Single women usually adopted the Mrs title when they applied for a Housekeepers position, but I wonder if also she wanted the title as a shield against the single men on the trip.

Mmm .. me now thinks Mrs A F LOXTON might have found a better prospect for a husband, on the boat trip to NZ ???  :D

The following seems to be the "charmer" she eventually wed in New Zealand.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/112792580?searchTerm=Louisa%20macartney

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/229296387?searchTerm=Louisa%20macartney

He first appeared in NSW Police Gazette in 1895 on a desertion charge and failing to obey a Magistrate's order to support his wife.

Looks like he is on NZ electoral roll at  Northland - Bay of Islands -1896 - as a labourer residing at Opanake.
Seems about 1900 he returned to Sydney, and was arrested on earlier desertion charge.
Described as a former oyster house keeper and aged between 30 and 33 years.  (Age-wise good match for man (A H Mccartney (sic) who dies 1939 NZ.)

Occupation-wise suggests he is also same A H MACARTNEY (who with Alice Frances) appears  on various rolls as a "fisherman" living at Weymouth.      And there is this article too >

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19061005.2.80

added > Oyster Bed Leases - 1903 - AH MACARTNEY
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19030709.2.24
[Ernest James MACARTNEY b. Aug. 1887 - NSW - parents confirmed in his NZ WW1 Army record - states his father Arthur had lived in NZ for 19 yrs (arr, c 1897) mother had never lived in NZ]

 Edited to add additional info.

:)     Apologies Minniehaha ... seemed to have strayed some distance from locating H T LOXTON's footprints.

Interesting family isn't it. Alice was also quite old to having her 1st child at around 43 too.
