How to find a Marine Engineer missing 1911
« on: Monday 30 August 21 03:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am trying to find a trace of my great grandfather who was born in 1877 in Wandsworth London. Documents I have state he was a Marine Engineer and Chief Engineer RN.
He married in Grimsby in 1908.
The last info I have is from around 1911 when he was named as the father on a childs death certificate. The 1911 Census states his wifes name and she is married not widowed. I can not find him on any Census for 1911, or anything past 1911, not even a death certificate.
Where would I find out which ship he was on, was there a war around that time, or if he was lost at sea?
Thanks in advance,

May I suggest that you give us his name as that will help us to try and find him for you.

One reason that he is not on the 1911 census is that he was at sea as opposed to being in a port.  He could have died abroad or at sea.
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire

Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

As Girl Guide has suggested if you give us his name we may be able to locate him.  FindMyPast has this information on those serving in the forces

1911 census coverage
The 1911 census for England and Wales is available in full. The census also includes records for the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Royal Navy ships at sea, and overseas military establishments. Please note: records for naval and military establishments based in the UK are included in the counties in which they are found. British ships docked in port will also be found in the relevant county. British Naval ships and military bases overseas are listed separately.
