Michaelina Marfa Moya Namovich
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 16:26 BST (UK) »
This lady, born 1900, was the daughter of Baron Michael Kassimir-Namovich of St Petersburg. The family left/fled Russia when she was about 7 months old - the story of this can be found in the Connecticut College News, Vol. 14 No. 11 which is available to read on the internet. She grew up in Connecticut but was in Maine in 1924 when she received American citizenship and then married Richard S(tanley) Nugent, apparently born 7 May 1895 in Chicago.
Michaelina then wrote "Phantoms in the wine " as Jean Stark published 1930, and then with her husband vanished, at least from records. I found the 1942 WW2 Draft Card for Nugent, living with a Florence Baldwin Nugent, no indication of relationship. Michaelina is on a 1928 passenger list from Bermuda. I then found a marriage in Connecticut in 1934 for a Florence Baldwin and a Richard Nugent - perhaps coincidental.
Neither Michaelina or Nugent can be found on censuses, nor a probable death record for either. A Google search brought up little, surprising, perhaps not, that her family connections  did not merit her more attention.
Is it possible to dicover what happened to her, and her husband.

John

There are lots of passenger ship and passport applications records for Florence L Baldwin and her father Clarence M Baldwin on Family Search. They travelled to England a lot, as well as living there off and on.

Florence was born 26 Nov 1903, New Jersey.

The family in 1911 census

Very interesting and shows that the 1924 marriage did not last. But what happened to Michaelina and why is there no sign of her (or Richard) on censuses etc. I can think of various scenarios, although absence from America is not reflected by any sign of them on passenger lists. And is the Richard Stanley Nugent the Richard S. Nugent she married anyway in a possible marriage of convenience.

Where was she living when she wrote her book in 1930?
-----
Have you been able to trace her sisters? Their obituaries might mention Michaelina. I couldn't find them after their arrival.
-----
Have you found her on the 1920 or 1930 censuses?

-----
Zagory is probably Žagarė, Lithuania.
But I still didn't find anything by looking for them with a birthplace of Lithuania instead of Russia.
-----
In 1928 when she returned from Bermuda she said she was living in Lock Arbor, New York. This could probably be Loch Arbor, New Jersey, which is less than a mile from Deal, NJ, where her husband was living in 1929 when he remarried in Greenwich, Connecticut

------
Her father may have died 16 December 1922, in Hartford. indexed as Michael Namovick
https://www.ctatatelibrarydata.org/death-records/

-------
for the record:
their arrival:
29 Oct 1900 manifest of the SS Weimar
Michael Namowich, 45, farmer
Geoloria/Geolorna ?, 24
Alexandra, 14
Emilie 9 1/2 years
Michaeline, 8 months

last residence for all: Zagory
destination: Hartford, Conn
yes they have tickets to their destination
they paid for the trip themselves and are carrying more than $30
They have never been to the US before
their destination: brother in law, Hartford [but no name listed]
all in good health

--------
1910 Census of Hartford, Ward 6
April 21, 1910
on Main Street

Alexander Keulenas, 28, married 1 time, for 4 years, arrived 1904, naturalized
Martha Keulenas, 28, married 1 time, for 4 years, no children, arrived 1902
Michael Namowicz, 47, widowed, boarder
Michaelina Namowicz, 10, boarder
nationality of all, and of their parents: Russian-Lithuanian

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MK23-SQH

no sign of her sisters in 1910.

Richard Nugent's parents were at 27 Pacific Avenue, Bradley Beach, NJ from at least the time Richard registered for the WWI draft (1917 or 1918) until at least 1940 when his mother was still at that address in the city directory.

He is listed at that address:
-- when he registered for WWI - no date or contact person on the form. occupation: salesman for an envelope company based in Chicago. his place of employment: the state of New Jersey.
-- with them on the census in 1920 - his occupation is traveling salesman
-- in the city directory in 1924, as a salesman

but he is not listed after that at all.

The Asbury Park city directory for those years included Bradley Beach, Deal, and Lock Arbour.
The available directories that I found were 1924, 1926, 1928, 1931, and 1937.
------
as for Portland, Maine
He could be the Richard Nugent listed as a salesman boarding at 188a State in the 1924 directory. This man is not there in 1925, 1927, or 1930.

He and Michaelina are not listed in 1925, 1927, or 1930. Those are the years I checked.

There was no Michaelina Namovich, or anyone else by that surname, in the Portland directory for 1924. But if she was a non-working woman you couldn't expect her to be listed in most city directories back then.
