There was no formal adoption then but Peter raised him and John must have thought it appropriate to name as his father on his marriage but as you say, preferred his birth name.

I wonder what happened to his sister, Ellen?  I've not found an early death/burial so far, but I may have missed it.

There is a burial.

20th May 1833
Ellen Barton, 17 yrs, illegitimate daughter of Alice Barton, of Soughers Lane End, Ashton. Inflammation of the Lungs.
