Joseph Wickens (1806 Wolverton -1892 Surrey) had a father, William (1790? 1851 Census, Woolhampton, d. 1856 Newbury).
Anyone ever come across who William's parents might be? My suspicion is that they were roaming migratory farm laborers and unrecorded.

Thank you for your reply. But you did not answer the question. WHO were WILLIAM's parents?  I know and have written on much about Joseph and his descendants.
And, I used to believe in your 1778 birth, but the 1851 Census states age: 61 years old. That's 1790. I am more and more suspicious of that 61 age because it makes him 14 at his marriage. Where did you get 1778?

Are you referring to the 1851 entry transcribed as Wilkins?

HO107/1685/29/10

Did you not check his age at death in 1856 using GRO online?   He was 78 giving a birthyear of approx 1778

I was filling in some background so that those trying to help you had a bit more information on William than you had given.

You ask where I got the 1778 birth from - I have given you details of his burial which gave an age of 78, the GRO index for his death given by Carole also gives the same age.  As you mention he would only have been 14 when he married Diana if born 1790.

Do you have the details from his second marriage.

Thank you for your kind attention to my question of parenthood. Right, official records, mine being Berk death index has 1778. I have learned that the census can be misleading because anyone can answer for all at the address. My curiosity of William's parents is his occupation as a gardener. Where did that skill come from, he passing it on to his sons. In a Mormon Library search (you don't have to be Mormon) once (stupidly not recording my questionable find), I wrote down what I thought might be a father. It follows: William, b. 13dec1752, Sulhamstead, Bannister, Berk, m. Sarah 1768, d. 6 jun 1829. Is there any verification for this?

Marriage entries for that far back do not show birthyears so I can only think you may have seen it on somebody's family tree.
