McKean descendants of Clan Gunn
« on: Friday 03 September 21 16:03 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my husbands paternal line. He is a McKean. His family came from Clan Gunn in Caithness and eventually were in Glasgow before heading to Canada.

Does anyone have any info or resources on the McKeans that came form Clan Gunn?

Since you provided no names or dates its pretty hard for people to help.

Was his father born in Scotland?

The place to search for people is here https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Here's as far as I've documented his paternal line, starting with his 7th great-grandfather and ending with his grandfather.

David McKean (1720-????) Born in Ayrshire. Married in Kilmarnock, Ayr in 1738 to Janet Allan.

John McKean (1755-????) Born in Ayrshire. Married in 1784 to Margaret Hill.

John McKean (1790-1850) Born in Ayrshire. Married in 1811 to Janet McClatchie.

John McKean (1813-1893) Born in Ayr, Ayrshire. Married in 1836 to Jane Long.

William Long McKean (1837-1881) Born in St. Quivox and Newton, Ayrshire. Married in Belfast in 1860 to Annie Campbell.

Campbell McKean (1865-1940) Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Married in Govan, Lanarkshire in 1889 to Mary Jane Gordon.

Campbell McKean (1890-1981) Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Married in Glasgow in 1914 to Caroline Mitchell. Immigrated to Canada in 1925.

Campbell Gordon McKean (1914-2009) Born in Dalmuir, Glasgow. He immigrated to Canada with his parents when he was 10.

Ayrshire is a long way from Caithness.

I'll assume you have all the children of each of the families. Example...the 10 of David/Janet Allan.

Btw...Dalmuir is in the Parish of Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire which is west of Glasgow along the Clyde.

Makes me wonder if maybe they are Clan MacIain instead, since they are closer to Argyll (which my own paternal line -- my maiden name is McKeen -- descends from). I really hope that's not the case though, because my husband got 'Aut Pax Aut Bellum' tattooed on his arm years ago, lol. I don't want to make him regret it.

The oral history passed down in the family was that they were from Clan Gunn though, so I'll have to do some more digging.

Given the period, it seems unlikely there is a Gunn / Caithness connection.

The following may be of interest and some of the explanations make more sense:

In Scotland the majority of McKean's and name variants such as Keane can be found found in the Lowlands.

If you go to Scotland's People select Church Registers the marriages select male then enter McKean you will generate a list of all marriage banns on record and keep in mind the might represent about half.  You can sort by Parish which will demonstrate what I mean.

The following book might help keeping in mind it is just one book written in 1906.

I am from the 1799-1831 Thomas McKean and the Thomas McKean 1776-1831 family line. Do I have any relatives from the 1831 family tree?
