Ferguson/Butler mystery can someone help me Please ?
« on: Saturday 04 September 21 15:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to help a friend whose 98 year old grandmother is coming to the end of her life and my friend would like to reunite her grandma with her forbears

The facts I have  are that Dorothy was born 14th March 1923 in the Manchester/ Prestwich area and that her mother's maiden name was Butler.

Freeebmd show no Dorothy with a mother named Butler at all. However in the 1939 Electors list Dorothy is living with her widowed mother Jane Ferguson nee Butler in Prestwich

There is only one marriage of a John S Ferguson to a Mary H A Butler in 1918  in the Chorlton R D

A real puzzle can anyone offer me any advice please  ?

Regards

David

There is no amendment date or code alongside that 1939 register image which has replaced the surname of Ferguson by Butler.  ADDED Not the other way round, surname was Ferguson in 1939 and amended to Butler

Could this be the birth
Births Jun 1923
Ferguson    Dorothy    mmn Hoyles
Prestwich    8d   523

and the marriage
Marriages Sep qtr 1922
FERGUSON    James
HOYLES    Jane    (spouse) Ferguson
Prestwich    8d   712

Perhaps her husband died and she just lived with a 'Butler'.  Bear in mind that the 1939 register was continually updated by the NHS.  Did Dorothy have a sister who could be blacked out in 1939 reg

ADDED Have you checked her marital status in 1939

I presume you are referring to the 1939 National Register?
This was not a list of Electors, but originally used for the issue of Identity Cards, and later Ration Books.

As Rosie said, it was later used by the NHS, and recorded changes in names for 50 years until the 1990's.
So, what you are seeing isn't a maiden name, but a later change of name, possibly due to marriage, but also possibly just what she wanted to be known by.

Well spotted, tazzie! :D

There is a marriage in Barrow in 1962 of a Ferguson to a Butler. Could this be her?

There was a son from the marriage born in 1963
