Catholic Schools in Dublin
« on: Sunday 05 September 21 11:48 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters

My late mother was born in 1918 on the North Circular Road in Dublin, where she spent the earliest years of her life, before the family moved to a new housing development on Shelmartin Terrace in Fairview/Marino at some point in the 1920s.

She finally left school aged 14 years.

Between those two locations, which Catholic primary and secondary schools would my mother and her brothers and sisters have most likely attended during that period?

Also, does anyone know if there might be old pupil records in existence anywhere from any of these schools that I could access?

Many thanks in advance.

The closest primary school to Shelmartin Avenue is St. Mary's in Windsor Avenue.

I don't know if it was open back then, though it would make sense with the influx of children following the rehousing. You could contact them.

Many thanks for your replies Dublin 1850 and Eadaoin.

In answer to your question, Eadaoin, they lived at 617 of the North Circular Road.

I shall check out St Mary's school.  That's a good starting point. Thank you Dublin 1850!

Regards

The school on Windsor Ave isn't mentioned in Thoms 1922, or 1937 (which doesn't mean it wasn't there . . St Mary's National school is mentioned in 1956 at no. 43a.

In 1922, No 617 N.C.R. is between N. Richmond St. and Summerhill Parade - it shows B. O'Hanlon living there. So you'd be looking for schools in that area.

Other possibilities for girls in that local area could be the Loreto primary in Gardiner Street or St. Vincent's Girls National School in North William Street or Rutland Street Primary. The last two are still open, though Rutland Street is in Lower Gloucester place now.
