It won't be the 1837 death as mentioned by Kloumann.  There is a newspaper snippet which says Jan 31 at Sion Road, age 76 Mr. James Child.

The maths means that he was born in 1761, so unless you are 20 years out with the birth year...... ::)

Thank you for spotting this. Does the snippet give any clues about this James Child's occupation?

I have no idea of the birth year of the James Child I seek; all I know for 100% sure is that he married Alice Go(u)ld in 1809 in Devon, very close to where the Navy has their base.

I haven't found him on any census. Only seen him on 2 baptisms (1819 + 1820), occupation Servant, living in St Stephens, Bristol.

Alice nee Gould/married Child/married Eamer (Amer) is visible in Bristol, remarried, on the 1841 and 1851, and her birth year is approx. 1790.

But James Child could have been 20 years older, who knows?

No, no occupation given at all.  What I gave you was it.

I did try looking at some of the navy pension records for a James Child but it just gives his name and amount paid.  No mention at all of where he came from.

I see that Alice Child married William Eamer/Amer on the 16th April 1821 in Bristol.  It's a transcript so no indication as to whether she was a widow.

Girl Guide, thank you
Alice could have been a widow, or been abandoned... or just left him, her choice!

There's no certainty that this James CHILD was a Naval man. It's just that their marriage took place in East Stonehouse, and their son Henry Child was Born At Sea.

In 1819 + 1820 James is a Servant in Bristol.
But he could always have been a ManServant, e.g. to an Army family, who are rich, who travel across oceans and live at the ports they come back to...

Can we work at all with the middle names of the 2 sons of James and Alice that I've found:

       BELLAMY,  and   SEATON

Is there any evidence of a well-to-do Bellamy and/or Seaton family residing in the East Stonehouse area, then later Bristol? (having visited e.g. the West Indies, or any theatre of war, in the meantime?)

Ok I've found Henry Bellamy in the 1851 census with his wife Mary and four children living at 2, Oxford Road, St Phillip & St Jacob Out, Clifton, Gloucestershire

Henry's place of birth is at sea.

Reg. Dist. Clifton, Piece No 1954, Folio 249, Page 26

This looks like Henry's marriage

Marriages Jun 1841
CHILD    Henry        Bedminster    11   85
SMITH    Mary Ann        Bedminster    11   85

One of the children's birth reg.

CHILD, WILLIAM  ALFRED     SMITH
GRO Reference: 1848  M Quarter in THE CLIFTON UNION  Volume 11  Page 281

If you get the marriage certificate that should hopefully say something about Henry's father.

Henry was baptised on the 19 March 1820

You're very kind people.

No need to fill in any more details about this Henry Child, coming forward to the present day, because I have all of them already.

I'm interested in the origins of his father James Child (married Alice Gold) - who Henry didn't mention on his marriage certificate, that's correct.
