Archives at Library of Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 07 September 21 23:11 BST (UK) »
Is there any kind Rootschatter who may be going to the Archives at Birmingham Library?
I'm given to understand this is the library in Centenary Square, Broad Street in Birmingham.

They hold a lot of archives for the Adderley family of Hams Hall Warwickshire, who also held lands in Staffordshire.

There is one document there I would like to see.
I have contacted them, but they do not provide any sort of copying service. As I am on the other side of the world from England, it makes it very difficult to access documents held in depositories there if they will not copy or photograph things.

I would be happy to pay the daily photography fee if anybody is going that way.

The reference for the document is
MS917/1321
8 May 1614.
Deed. William Bowyer;Rauffe Sneyde;Walter Rowley. Land in Norton in the Moors.

Thank you very much

Unfortunately the hours at the Library and Archives have been greatly reduced, also you need an appointment and Carn card. i'm fairly sure that items have to be ordered in advance.  I used to go regularly until the Lbrary was moved and systems changed. It's not so user friendly anymore!!

The hours were reduced before covid, I'm not sure whether appointments were needed for the Archives before. It's a seperate room from the general studies part. The staff numbers were reduced too, and then they stopped some of the services.

Thanks Monica for clarifying.  As you can see research has become very difficult now.
Also they have put those concertina shelves in the open research area and if you want a book that's in the other end you have to wait or come back. It's such a shame when time is limited, there would have been plenty of space to put everyting out as before.

Thanks for all your replies.
It does sound as if they are making it more and more difficult for people to access what they have in the archives. Surely one of the reasons for having archives is so that people can look at them - not just have them mouldering away in some depository just for the sake of it. Very weird.
And yes I know it will be because of budget constraints etc, but other many other archives seem to manage it and are  more 'user friendly'.
